Dark Souls 3 introduces several special actions and combat maneuvers that can give players a significant edge. Mastering these techniques, from quick attacks after a roll to utilizing weapon arts, is crucial for efficient combat and survival against the game's formidable foes.

Roll/Backstep Attacks

Immediately after performing a roll or backstep, pressing the regular attack button (R1/RB) will execute a quicker, often more advantageous attack. This allows you to punish enemy recovery frames or initiate combat swiftly after evading an attack. These attacks can have different properties than standard light attacks, such as altered reach or speed.

Weapon Arts

Nearly every weapon and shield in Dark Souls 3 possesses a unique Weapon Art, activated by pressing L2/LT (or the corresponding button on PC). These arts consume Focus Points (FP) and offer a wide range of effects:

  • Offensive Arts: Powerful special attacks, such as the Warrior's Charge or the Farron Greatsword's L2 combo.
  • Defensive Arts: Stances that can parry or block attacks in unique ways, like the Knight's Oath or the Shield Bash.
  • Utility Arts: Skills that buff the player, debuff enemies, or offer unique movement options, such as the Way of White Corona or the Hunter's Instinct.

Stance and Parry

Many weapons, particularly straight swords and curved swords, have a 'Stance' Weapon Art. This allows You to enter a ready position, from which they can perform a follow-up attack. If timed correctly, this follow-up can function as a parry, opening the enemy for a critical riposte. Mastering the timing of these parries is vital for high-level play.

Consumable Usage

Quickly using consumable items like Firebombs, resins for weapon buffs, or Green Blossoms for stamina regeneration can be a critical part of combat. Assing frequently used items to your quick item slots allows for rapid deployment mid-fight.

Jumping Attacks

While not a dedicated button, performing a running attack while near an enemy and pressing the heavy attack button (R2/RT) can sometimes result in a jumping attack. These attacks often have high poise damage and can stagger enemies, creating openings for further attacks.

Integrating these special actions into your combat repertoire will significantly improve your effectiveness and survivability in the challenging world of Dark Souls 3.
