Magic Spells (Sorceries, Pyromancies, Miracles)
Mastering the arcane arts in Dark Souls III can turn the tide of even the most desperate battles. This guide will walk you through the various schools of magic – Sorceries, Pyromancies, and Miracles – detailing how to acquire them, the necessary catalysts, and effective strategies for their use.
Understanding Magic Types and Catalysts
Each spell school requires a specific type of catalyst to cast. Equipping the correct catalyst is crucial, as is meeting the stat requirements for both the catalyst and the spell itself.
- Sorceries: Primarily scale with Intelligence (INT). Cast using Staves or Chimes (for some unique sorceries).
- Pyromancies: Scale with both Intelligence (INT) and Faith (FTH). Cast using Pyromancy Flames.
- Miracles: Primarily scale with Faith (FTH). Cast using Talismans or Chimes.
Acquiring Spells and Trainers
Spells are typically learned from specific NPCs or found as loot in the world. To learn spells from trainers, you'll need to provide them with Tomes or Scrolls, which unlock new spells for purchase.
Sorceries
Sorceries are characterized by their focus on ranged damage, utility, and sometimes crowd control. They are ideal for players who prefer to keep their distance and unleash devastating magical attacks.
- Starting Sorcerer: The Sorcerer starting class begins with the Soul Arrow and Heavy Soul Arrow sorceries.
- Orbeck of Vinheim:
- Location: Found in the Road of Sacrifices, within the Crucifixion Woods. From the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, head towards the building with the two Lycanthropes. Orbeck is upstairs.
- Recruitment: To recruit him, you must have at least 10 Intelligence.
- Scrolls:
- Sage's Scroll: Found in the Farron Keep swamp, near the Great Crab. Unlocks Great Soul Arrow, Great Heavy Soul Arrow, and Magic Weapon.
- Golden Scroll: Found in the Farron Keep swamp, in a cave guarded by Basilisks. Unlocks Pestilent Mist, Aural Decoy, and Hidden Body.
- Logan's Scroll: Found in the Profaned Capital, in a cell near Siegward of Catarina. Unlocks Soul Stream, Soul Greatsword, and Homing Soulmass.
- Crystal Scroll: Dropped by the Crystal Sage in the Grand Archives (NG+ or after defeating Oceiros, the Consumed King, and finding the shortcut). Unlocks Crystal Soul Spear, Crystal Homing Soulmass, and Crystal Magic Weapon.
- Karla:
- Location: Imprisoned in the Irithyll Dungeon. Requires the Jailer's Key Ring from the Profaned Capital.
- Unique Sorceries: Sells some dark sorceries, including Affinity and Dark Edge, after you give her the relevant tomes.
Pyromancies
Pyromancies offer a versatile blend of offensive fire spells, utility, and even some healing. They scale with both Intelligence and Faith, making them suitable for hybrid builds.
- Cornyx of the Great Swamp:
- Location: Found caged in the Undead Settlement, hanging from a ledge near the Cliff Underside bonfire.
- Recruitment: Speak to him and accept his offer to teach you pyromancy.
- Tombs:
- Great Swamp Pyromancy Tome: Found in the Undead Settlement, near the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, in a small alcove. Unlocks Great Combustion and Fire Orb.
- Izalith Pyromancy Tome: Found in Smouldering Lake, near the Demon Ruins bonfire, behind a hidden wall. Unlocks Chaos Bed Vestiges and Great Chaos Fire Orb.
- Quelana Pyromancy Tome: Found in Smouldering Lake, in the lava area near the Old Demon King boss arena. Unlocks Fire Surge and Rapport.
- Grave Warden Pyromancy Tome: Dropped by the Carthus Sandworm in Smouldering Lake. Unlocks Black Flame and Black Fire Orb.
- Karla:
- Location: Imprisoned in the Irithyll Dungeon.
- Unique Pyromancies: Sells powerful dark pyromancies like Black Serpent and Warmth after you provide her with the relevant tomes.
Miracles
Miracles focus on healing, buffs, and defensive abilities, alongside some offensive lightning and dark spells. They primarily scale with Faith, making them essential for support-oriented or divine builds.
- Irina of Carim:
- Location: Found in the Undead Settlement, locked in a cell at the bottom of the tower near the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire.
- Recruitment: Requires the Grave Key from the Sewer Centipede in the Undead Settlement.
- Tombs:
- Braille Divine Tome of Carim: Found in the Road of Sacrifices, near the Halfway Fortress bonfire, in a small cave. Unlocks Med Heal and Force.
- Braille Divine Tome of Lothric: Found in Lothric Castle, near the Dragon Barracks bonfire, in the room with the two Lothric Knights. Unlocks Bountiful Light and Blessed Weapon.
- Deep Braille Divine Tome: Found in the Cathedral of the Deep, in the area with the giant deacons. Unlocks Gnaw and Deep Protection. (Give to Karla, not Irina, to avoid her tragic questline end).
- Londor Braille Divine Tome: Purchased from Yuria of Londor for 5000 souls. Unlocks Dark Blade and Vow of Silence. (Give to Karla, not Irina).
- Karla:
- Location: Imprisoned in the Irithyll Dungeon.
- Unique Miracles: Sells dark miracles like Dark Blade and Vow of Silence if given the Deep or Londor Braille Divine Tomes.
- Gertrude's Archdeacon:
- Location: Found dead in the Grand Archives, near the shortcut to the Twin Princes boss fight.
- Unique Miracle: Drops the Divine Pillars of Light miracle.
General Magic Strategies
- Attunement Slots: Increase your Attunement stat to gain more spell slots, allowing you to equip more spells simultaneously.
- Ashen Estus Flask: Prioritize upgrading your Ashen Estus Flask to ensure you have enough FP (Focus Points) for casting.
- Rings: Equip rings that boost your spell damage or FP regeneration. Key rings include the Young Dragon Ring, Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring (Sorceries), Great Swamp Ring, Witch's Ring (Pyromancies), Ring of the Sun's Firstborn, and Morne's Ring (Miracles). The Sage Ring is also invaluable for increasing casting speed.
- Off-Hand Catalyst: Consider equipping a second catalyst in your off-hand for specific buffs or to quickly switch between spell types. For example, a Scholar's Candlestick in the off-hand boosts sorcery damage.
- Spell Combos: Experiment with combining spells. For instance, using Pestilent Mist to damage large enemies while you cast other offensive spells, or buffing your weapon with Magic Weapon before engaging in melee.
- FP Management: Learn to manage your FP effectively. Don't spam powerful spells unnecessarily. Use basic spells for weaker enemies and save your heavy hitters for bosses or challenging encounters.
