Boss Soul Transposition
Boss Soul Transposition is a unique crafting mechanic in Dark Souls III that allows you to transform the souls of defeated bosses into powerful weapons, spells, or rings. This process is essential for acquiring some of the game's most iconic and effective gear, often tailored to specific builds and playstyles.
Unlocking Soul Transposition
To begin transposing boss souls, you must first rescue and recruit Ludleth of Courland to Firelink Shrine. Ludleth is one of the five Lords of Cinder and the only one who remains at the shrine. He is found sitting on his throne from the very beginning of the game.
The crucial item needed to enable Soul Transposition is the Transposing Kiln. This key item is dropped by the Curse-Rotted Greatwood, the boss of the Undead Settlement. After defeating the Greatwood, interact with the item it drops to acquire the Kiln.
- Defeat the Curse-Rotted Greatwood: Travel to the Undead Settlement. The Curse-Rotted Greatwood is located in the pit beneath the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, accessible by dropping through a hole in the floor of the building where you find the Mound-Makers covenant.
- Acquire the Transposing Kiln: Upon defeating the Curse-Rotted Greatwood, a glowing item will appear in the center of the arena. Pick it up to obtain the Transposing Kiln.
- Return to Firelink Shrine: Warp back to Firelink Shrine.
- Speak with Ludleth of Courland: Approach Ludleth, who is seated on the second throne from the left (facing the thrones). Select the "Soul Transposition" dialogue option.
Once you hand over the Transposing Kiln to Ludleth, the "Soul Transposition" option will become permanently available when speaking with him, allowing you to convert boss souls.
How Soul Transposition Works
When you speak to Ludleth and select "Soul Transposition," a menu will appear listing all the boss souls currently in your inventory. Selecting a boss soul will then display the various items that can be crafted from it. Each boss soul typically offers a choice of two or three unique items, which can include:
- Weapons: Often powerful and unique, with special weapon arts.
- Spells: Sorceries, Pyromancies, or Miracles that replicate the boss's abilities.
- Rings: Special rings with unique passive effects.
The transposition process consumes the boss soul and sometimes requires additional souls (standard souls, not boss souls) as a fee. Be mindful that each boss soul can only be transposed once per playthrough, and you must choose carefully as you cannot acquire all items from a single boss soul in one run. If you wish to obtain all items associated with a particular boss soul, you will need to enter New Game+ or trade with other players.
Key Considerations for Transposition
- Build Planning: Before transposing, consider your current character build and what items would best complement it. Some boss weapons scale with specific stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith), while spells require certain attunement and casting stats.
- Limited Choices: Remember, you can only pick one item per boss soul per playthrough. If you want a different item from the same boss, you'll need to defeat that boss again in a subsequent New Game+ cycle.
- Soul Value: Boss souls can also be consumed directly from your inventory for a large number of standard souls. While this can be tempting for quick levels, it's almost always more beneficial to transpose them into unique gear, especially on your first playthrough.
Mastering Soul Transposition is crucial for any aspiring Ashen One looking to wield the power of their defeated foes and truly customize their journey through Lothric.
