Item Discovery

Item Discovery is a crucial stat in Dark Souls Remastered, directly influencing the drop rate of items from defeated enemies. A higher Item Discovery stat means enemies are more likely to drop their loot, including rare weapons, armor pieces, upgrade materials, and consumable items like Humanity. Mastering Item Discovery is essential for efficient farming and acquiring specific gear for your build.

Understanding the Mechanic

Your base Item Discovery stat starts at 100. This value can be significantly increased through various means, stacking multiplicatively in some cases. The maximum Item Discovery you can achieve is 410.

Boosting Your Item Discovery

There are several key methods to enhance your Item Discovery:

  1. Humanity:
    • Soft Humanity: Holding "soft" Humanity (the counter next to your health bar, not the consumable item) directly increases your Item Discovery. Each point of soft Humanity, up to a maximum of 10, provides a bonus.
    • Optimal Humanity Level: The most significant boosts occur between 0 and 10 soft Humanity. Beyond 10, the returns diminish, so aiming for 10 soft Humanity is generally the most efficient strategy for farming.
    • How to Gain Soft Humanity:
      • Consuming a Humanity item.
      • Defeating a boss as a phantom or host.
      • Killing a certain number of enemies in an area where the boss is still alive (typically 10-12 enemies per Humanity, up to 10 total).
      • Successfully invading another player's world and defeating them.
      • Being summoned as a phantom and helping the host defeat a boss.
  2. Covetous Gold Serpent Ring:
    • Effect: This ring provides a substantial boost to your Item Discovery. It is an absolute must-have for any serious farming endeavor.
    • Location: The Covetous Gold Serpent Ring is found in Sen's Fortress. After activating the giant boulder mechanism, guide a boulder into the hole that leads to the Mimic chest. Defeat the Mimic to obtain the ring. Alternatively, if you miss it the first time, you can reach it by carefully dropping down from the area above the Mimic's location.
  3. Symbol of Avarice:
    • Effect: This headpiece, resembling a Mimic's head, also provides a significant Item Discovery bonus. However, it constantly drains your health while worn, so be mindful of your HP.
    • Location: The Symbol of Avarice has a chance to drop from any Mimic chest you defeat. There is no guaranteed drop location, so you may need to farm Mimics across various areas like Sen's Fortress, Anor Londo, or the Duke's Archives. The best strategy is to defeat all Mimics you encounter and hope for the drop. If you're struggling, you can try using a Homeward Bone after defeating a Mimic and before it fully despawns, then reloading the area to potentially reset its loot table, though this is not a guaranteed method.

Maximum Item Discovery Setup

To achieve the highest possible Item Discovery (410), you will need to combine all three methods:

  • 10 Soft Humanity (provides a significant boost)
  • Equip the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring
  • Equip the Symbol of Avarice

This combination will maximize your chances of obtaining rare drops, making farming for specific items much more efficient. Remember to manage the health drain from the Symbol of Avarice by carrying Estus Flasks or other healing items.

Farming Strategies

Once your Item Discovery is optimized, consider these strategies for efficient farming:

  • Target Specific Enemies: Research which enemies drop the items you need. For example, Balder Knights in the Undead Parish drop Balder Side Swords, and Darkwraiths in New Londo Ruins drop Titanite Slabs.
  • Bonfire Proximity: Choose farming locations close to a bonfire for quick resets and efficient runs.
  • Route Optimization: Plan a clear route through the farming area to quickly dispatch enemies and collect loot.
  • Homeward Bone/Darksign: Use these items to quickly return to a bonfire after clearing an area, resetting enemy spawns without having to trek back.

By understanding and using Item Discovery effectively, you can significantly reduce the grind and acquire the powerful gear necessary to conquer Lordran.
