Broken bones are a severe injury in DayZ, drastically limiting your mobility and causing persistent pain. Without proper treatment, a fractured limb can be a death sentence, making you an easy target for zombies and other players. This section details the process of splinting and repairing broken bones, a critical skill for any survivor.

Understanding Broken Bones

Broken bones, or fractures, are typically caused by sificant trauma:

  • Falls: Falling from heights (e.g., off buildings, cliffs) is the most common cause.
  • Vehicle Accidents: Crashing a car at high speed.
  • Heavy Impacts: Taking substantial damage from melee attacks or explosions.

The primary symptoms of a broken bone are:

  • Severe Pain: Your character will groan, and the screen may blur or shake, especially when trying to move or aim.
  • Impaired Mobility: You will be unable to sprint and may move much slower.
  • Inability to Aim Properly: Your aim will be very unsteady.

The Splinting Process

To treat a broken bone, you need to create and apply a splint. This requires two main components:

  • Sticks: You'll need two long wooden sticks. These can be obtained by cutting down small trees with an axe or knife.
  • Rags: You'll need at least one rag. Rags can be obtained by tearing up clothing items (like shirts, pants, or bandages) or found in medical facilities and houses.

Crafting the Splint:

  1. Obtain Ingredients: Gather two long wooden sticks and at least one rag.
  2. Combine: Open your inventory. Drag the rag onto one of the long wooden sticks. This will create a wooden splint.

Applying the Splint

Once you have crafted the wooden splint:

  1. Open your inventory.
  2. Drag the wooden splint onto the affected limb. DayZ will usually indicate which limb is broken (e.g., "Left Leg," "Right Arm").
  3. Confirm the action.

Applying the splint will immediately mend the fracture. This will stop the persistent pain and allow you to sprint and aim normally again. The splint will remain on the limb until removed.

Important Considerations

  • Pain Management: While a splint fixes the bone, the initial pain might still be present. It's advisable to use painkillers or morphine after applying a splint to manage any residual discomfort and improve your immediate functionality.
  • Rags are Versatile: Remember that rags are also used for bandages. If you only have one rag, you'll need to choose between treating a wound or making a splint.
  • Sticks are Essential: Long wooden sticks are also used for crafting bows and fireplaces, making them a valuable resource.
  • Prevention is Key: While splints are effective, avoiding falls and dangerous situations in the first place is the best way to prevent broken bones.

What if I Don't Have Rags?

If you have sticks but no rags, you can tear up other clothing items like shirts, pants, or even backpacks to get rags. Be mindful of losing inventory space or insulation if you tear up essential gear.

Mastering the splinting process is a vital survival skill that can save your life and allow you to continue your journey through Chernarus even after a severe injury.
