Advanced Residuum Management

As you progress through Blackreef, Residuum becomes the lifeblood of your arsenal, allowing you to Infuse powerful weapons, Trinkets, and Slabs, carrying them over into subsequent loops. Mastering Residuum management is crucial for building a formidable loadout and ultimately breaking the loop. This section delves into advanced strategies for maximizing your Residuum intake and making informed infusion choices.

Maximizing Residuum Acquisition

Every item you leave behind at the end of a loop that isn't infused is converted into Residuum. However, some sources are far more lucrative than others. Prioritize these methods:

  • Visionary Kills: Each Visionary you eliminate drops a significant amount of Residuum. This is your primary source, especially in the later stages of the game when you're targeting multiple Visionaries in a single loop.
  • Glowing Objects: Keep an eye out for objects shimmering with a golden glow. These are Residuum deposits and can be found throughout all districts. While individually small, they add up quickly. Common locations include:
    • The Complex: Inside labs, near power generators, and hidden in storage areas.
    • Updaam: Around the library, inside homes, and near the "Forever Young" art installation.
    • Karl's Bay: Within the various hangars, the "Fia's Fortress" area, and the "Dawn of Reason" club.
    • Fristad Rock: Along the coast, inside the bunker, and near the "Otto's Workshop" area.
  • Duplicate Gear: Once you've infused a weapon or Trinket, any duplicates you pick up in subsequent loops will automatically convert into Residuum upon pickup. This makes early-game infusion of common items a good long-term investment.
  • Unwanted Infused Items: Don't be afraid to sacrifice infused items you no longer need. If you've found a superior weapon or Trinket, un-infusing the old one at the end-of-day screen will return a portion of its Residuum cost. This is particularly useful for upgrading from lower-tier weapons to their higher-tier (exemplar or unique) counterparts.

Strategic Infusion Choices

With a finite amount of Residuum each loop, careful planning is essential. Consider these factors when deciding what to Infuse:

Weapons:

  • Prioritize Exemplar and Unique Weapons: These weapons offer superior stats and unique perks. For example, the Strelak 5000 (sniper rifle) with its silenced variant, or the Fourpounder (hand cannon) for high damage output. Don't waste Residuum on common or even rare weapons unless they fill a critical gap in your early-game loadout.
  • Silenced Weapons: The LIMP-10 (SMG) and PT-6 Spiker (nail gun) with silencers are invaluable for stealth approaches. Infusing at least one silenced option is highly recommended.
  • Versatility: Aim for a balanced loadout. A good combination might include a long-range option (Strelak 5000), a mid-range automatic (Vopat Trencher or LIMP-10), and a powerful close-quarters weapon (Fourpounder or Tribunal).
  • Weapon Trinkets: Remember that Weapon Trinkets are infused separately from the weapons themselves. If you have a favorite weapon, consider infusing powerful Weapon Trinkets like Speed Loader (faster reload) or Sure Shot (increased accuracy).

Character Trinkets:

Character Trinkets offer passive buffs that can significantly alter your playstyle. Infuse those that complement your preferred approach.

  • Essential Survivability:
    • Sprinter: Increased movement speed. Crucial for traversing districts quickly and escaping hairy situations.
    • Steady Aim: Reduced weapon sway. Excellent for precision shooting with rifles.
    • Health Up: Increased maximum health. Always a solid choice for any build.
    • Stone Wall: Reduced damage taken. Pairs well with Health Up for a tankier build.
  • Stealth-Focused:
    • Ghost: Reduced enemy detection. A must-have for stealth players.
    • Silent Steps: Quieter movement. Further enhances stealth capabilities.
  • Aggressive Play:
    • Comeback Kid: Regenerate health after taking damage. Great for sustained firefights.
    • Deep Pockets: Increased ammo capacity. Essential for high-fire-rate weapons.
  • Utility:
    • Golden Harvest: Increased Residuum from sources. While not directly combat-oriented, this can accelerate your overall infusion progress. Consider infusing this early on to snowball your Residuum gains.
    • Juiced Up: Increased maximum power. Useful if you frequently use Slabs like Shift or Nexus.

Slabs:

Slabs are your active abilities and are arguably the most impactful infusions. You only have two Slab slots, so choose wisely.

  • Shift: The ability to teleport short distances. This is almost universally considered the most important Slab to infuse early. Its mobility and evasive capabilities are unparalleled.
  • Nexus: Links enemies together, allowing you to take down multiple foes with a single shot. Incredibly powerful for crowd control and stealth takedowns.
  • Aether: Renders you invisible. Excellent for stealth and bypassing difficult enemy encounters.
  • Karnesis: Telekinetically throws enemies. Fun and effective for environmental kills or disorienting groups.
  • Havoc: Increases your damage output and reduces incoming damage. A powerful offensive and defensive tool for direct confrontations.

Remember that each Slab has upgrades that can be acquired by defeating the same Visionary multiple times. These upgrades are also infused with Residuum, so factor that into your long-term planning.

The End-of-Loop Residuum Screen

This is where your Residuum management culminates. Take your time here:

  • Review Your Inventory: Look at all the items you've collected. Do you have any new exemplar weapons or powerful Trinkets you want to keep?
  • Un-infuse Unwanted Items: If you've picked up a better version of an already-infused item, or simply no longer need something, un-infuse it to reclaim some Residuum. This is especially useful for upgrading from a basic LIMP-10 to a silenced one, for example.
  • Prioritize Infusion: With your remaining Residuum, infuse your most critical items first. If you're short, prioritize a key weapon or a vital Character Trinket over something less essential.
  • Don't Hoard Excess Residuum: Any Residuum you don't spend at the end of the loop is lost. While you shouldn't infuse items you don't need, try to spend as much as possible on useful upgrades or new gear to maximize your investment for the next loop.

By diligently applying these advanced Residuum management techniques, you'll find yourself consistently better equipped, making each loop more efficient and bringing you closer to finally breaking free from Blackreef's eternal cycle.
