Game Progression & Story Beats

Welcome, Colt, to the perplexing and endlessly looping island of Blackreef! Your journey to break the loop is less about brute force and more about meticulous planning, observation, and strategic elimination. This section will guide you through the initial steps of understanding the loop, gathering crucial intelligence, and setting the stage for your ultimate escape.

The First Loop: Awakening and Initial Objectives

You'll awaken on a cold, desolate beach in Updaam with a throbbing headache and no memory. Your first objective is simple: survive and understand. Follow the on-screen prompts, which will guide you through basic movement and combat. Your primary goal in this initial phase is to reach the Antenna in Updaam.

  • Beach Encounter: After the initial awakening, you'll encounter your first few Eternalists. Use the environment to your advantage and practice stealth takedowns.
  • The Antenna: Head towards the prominent antenna structure. This is where you'll have your first significant interaction with Julianna Blake, your primary antagonist and the architect of your misery. She'll introduce you to the concept of the loop and your mission to break it.
  • The "Break the Loop" Objective: Julianna will task you with eliminating eight Visionaries in a single day. This is the core premise of the game. Don't worry about achieving this immediately; your first few loops are all about gathering information.

Early Game Progression: Gathering Intelligence and Understanding the Visionaries

Your initial loops are dedicated to uncovering the secrets of Blackreef and the Visionaries. Think of yourself as a detective, piecing together clues. The game will naturally guide you towards your first major lead: Charlie Montague's "Condition Detachment" game.

Investigating Charlie Montague's Game

Charlie is a prime target for early investigation due to the wealth of information his game provides. His game is located in Karl's Bay during the Afternoon.

  • Accessing Karl's Bay: You'll need to select Karl's Bay from the district selection screen. Remember, different districts are available at different times of day.
  • Finding Condition Detachment: Once in Karl's Bay (Afternoon), navigate towards the large hangar where Charlie's game is hosted. It's a sprawling, multi-level structure.
  • Playing the Game: The goal of Condition Detachment is to eliminate Charlie's "targets" (other Eternalists) without being detected. This is an excellent opportunity to practice stealth and environmental awareness.
  • Crucial Intel: you'll find various documents and audio logs. Pay close attention to these! They will reveal vital information about other Visionaries, their schedules, and their locations. Specifically, look for clues related to Fia Zborowska and her connection to Charlie.
  • Charlie's Location: Charlie himself is usually found on the top floor of the Condition Detachment facility, often in a control room overlooking the game area. Eliminating him here is a good early practice run.

Unlocking the "Ubiquity" Slab and Infusion

One of the most critical early game discoveries is the ability to infuse items, allowing them to persist between loops. This is tied to the Ubiquity Slab, which you'll acquire from your first Visionary kill.

  • First Visionary Kill: The game will naturally guide you towards your first Visionary kill, often Charlie or Harriet. Once you defeat a Visionary, they will drop their unique Slab.
  • The Infusion Tutorial: After your first Visionary kill, Julianna will contact you and explain the concept of Infusion. This is done at the end of each loop, in the Tunnels.
  • Infusing Items: At the end of a loop, you'll have the option to spend Residuum (a glowing resource found throughout Blackreef, often from glowing objects or defeated Visionaries) to infuse weapons, Slabs, and Trinkets. Prioritize infusing your favorite weapons and any Slabs you acquire. This is how you build your persistent loadout.
  • Residuum Management: Residuum is finite in each loop. Decide carefully what you want to keep. Early on, focus on a good primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and any Slabs you've acquired.

Expanding Your Knowledge: Tracking Other Visionaries

With Infusion unlocked, your next loops will focus on gathering more leads and understanding the intricate web of Visionary relationships. The game's Leads menu (accessed via the journal) is your best friend here. It will track your progress and highlight new objectives.

  • Following Leads: Actively pursue the leads presented in your journal. These will often point you towards specific districts at certain times of day to find new clues or encounter Visionaries.
  • Harriet Morse: Often an early target, Harriet can be found in Karl's Bay during the Morning, conducting her "sacrifices" in the hangar. She drops the Nexus Slab.
  • Egor Serling: Egor is usually in Complex during the Evening, experimenting with his nullifier. He drops the Aether Slab.
  • Wenjie Evans: Wenjie is typically found in the Complex during the Afternoon, surrounded by her clones. She drops the Havoc Slab.
  • Fia Zborowska: Fia is a trickier target, often found in Frisad Rock during the Noon, guarding her bunker. She drops the Shift Slab.
  • Aleksis Dorsey: Aleksis hosts his lavish party in Updaam during the Evening. He drops the Carnage Slab.

Remember, the key to breaking the loop is to get all eight Visionaries in one day. This requires careful planning and understanding their schedules. Don't be afraid to experiment and die; each loop is a learning opportunity!
