Mission Structure & Progression

Welcome, Colt, to the intricate dance of Blackreef! Unlike traditional RPGs, Deathloop's progression isn't about linear quests or experience points. It's about gathering knowledge, exploiting the loop, and ultimately, breaking it. Your primary objective is to eliminate all eight Visionaries in a single day. This section will guide you through understanding and mastering this unique mission structure.

The Loop: Your Constant Companion

Every day on Blackreef begins anew. You wake up on the beach in Updaam, and the cycle repeats. This seemingly endless loop is your greatest asset and your biggest challenge. Each loop offers a fresh opportunity to learn, experiment, and refine your approach. Don't be discouraged by death; embrace it as a learning experience.

Understanding the Day's Cycle

  • Morning: The day begins. Ideal for scouting, setting up traps, or taking out early-rising Visionaries like Harriet Morse in Karl's Bay.
  • Noon: Mid-day activities. Visionaries like Egor Serling in Complex or Charlie Montague in Condition Detachment (Updaam) are active.
  • Afternoon: The day winds down. Fia Zborowska in Fristad Rock and Wenjie Evans in The Complex are often accessible.
  • Evening: The grand finale. Julianna Blake will always be present, and the remaining Visionaries converge for Aleksis Dorsey's party in Updaam.

Unraveling Leads: The Path to Knowledge

Your primary form of "missions" in Deathloop are called Leads. These are investigations that provide crucial information about the Visionaries, their routines, and how to manipulate them to achieve your goal. Leads are categorized into two types:

1. Visionary Leads

These leads directly concern the eight Visionaries. They reveal their locations at different times of day, their habits, weaknesses, and the crucial information needed to get them all in one place or eliminate them efficiently. Examples include:

  • "Space Invader" (Charlie Montague): This lead guides you to Charlie's game, Condition Detachment, in Updaam. Completing it reveals his vulnerability to certain distractions.
  • "Devouring of the Lambs" (Harriet Morse): This lead will point you towards Harriet's sermon in Karl's Bay during the Morning. It's essential for understanding how to approach her without alerting her cultists.
  • "What Wenjie Wants" (Wenjie Evans): This lead will help you understand Wenjie's experiments in The Complex and how to isolate her from her duplicates.

2. Arsenal Leads

Arsenal Leads focus on discovering powerful weapons, Slabs, and Trinkets that will aid you in your quest. These are often tied to specific Visionaries or hidden locations. Examples include:

  • "The Moxie" (Unique Weapon): This lead will guide you to a specific location in Updaam where you can acquire a powerful unique shotgun.
  • "The Power of Infusion" (Core Mechanic): This critical lead introduces you to the Infusion system, allowing you to permanently keep weapons, Slabs, and Trinkets between loops. You'll need to collect enough Residuum from glowing objects, dead Visionaries, or specific anomalies to infuse items.
  • "Ghost in the Machine" (Egor's Slab): This lead will direct you to Egor Serling's location in The Complex, allowing you to acquire the Aether Slab, which grants invisibility.

Progression: Knowledge is Power (and Permanence)

Unlike traditional RPGs where experience points unlock new abilities, Deathloop's progression is tied to the knowledge you gain and the items you infuse. Each piece of information you uncover in a Lead is permanently remembered by Colt, even after a loop resets. This means:

  • Discovered Information: Once you learn a Visionary's routine or a secret passage, that knowledge is yours forever. It will appear in your journal, allowing you to plan your next loop more effectively.
  • Infused Gear: The Infusion system is paramount. Any weapon, Slab, or Trinket you infuse with Residuum will persist across loops. Prioritize infusing your favorite weapons (e.g., the Fourpounder for high damage, the Strelak 50-50 for close-quarters combat), essential Slabs (like Shift for mobility or Nexus for crowd control), and powerful Trinkets (e.g., Spring Heeled for double jump, Deep Pockets for more ammo).
  • Character Trinkets: These permanent upgrades to Colt's abilities (e.g., increased health, faster hacking) are found throughout Blackreef. Once acquired, they are yours to keep.

Strategic Planning: Orchestrating the Perfect Day

The ultimate goal is to eliminate all eight Visionaries in a single loop. This requires meticulous planning and execution. Use your journal to track Visionary locations and routines. Consider these strategies:

  • Target Prioritization: Some Visionaries are easier to eliminate early in the day or in specific locations. For instance, taking out Harriet in Karl's Bay (Morning) can be a quick win.
  • Environmental Manipulation: Learn how to use the environment to your advantage. For example, sabotaging Egor's experiment in The Complex can draw him out or make him vulnerable.
  • Chain Reactions: Look for opportunities to eliminate multiple Visionaries with a single action. The final party at Aleksis Dorsey's manor in Updaam (Evening) is designed for this, but you might find earlier opportunities.
  • Stealth vs. Mayhem: Decide your approach. Stealth allows for precise eliminations and avoids alerting other Visionaries, while going in guns blazing can be effective if you have the right gear and Slabs.

By consistently gathering information, infusing valuable gear, and strategically planning your loops, you will gradually piece together the puzzle of Blackreef and ultimately break the cycle.
