Weapon Scaling & Damage Types
Understanding weapon scaling and the various damage types is crucial for optimizing your build and maximizing your effectiveness in Demon's Souls. A well-chosen weapon, upgraded correctly, can turn a challenging encounter into a manageable one.
Weapon Scaling Explained
Every weapon in Demon's Souls has a set of scaling grades, represented by letters (S, A, B, C, D, E) next to specific stats (Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Faith). These grades indicate how much bonus damage the weapon receives from your character's corresponding stat. 'S' is the highest scaling, providing the most bonus damage, while 'E' is the lowest. A '-' indicates no scaling from that particular stat.
- Strength (STR): Primarily benefits heavy weapons like Greatswords, Greataxes, and Maces. Essential for builds focused on raw physical power.
- Dexterity (DEX): Enhances lighter, faster weapons such as Katanas, Rapiers, and Bows. Ideal for agile characters.
- Magic (MAG): Boosts weapons infused with magical properties or those that inherently deal magic damage. Vital for spellcasters.
- Faith (FTH): Improves weapons that deal Holy damage or are enchanted with divine properties. Important for Miracles users.
To check a weapon's scaling, open your inventory, select the weapon, and press the 'Details' button (often Square on PlayStation controllers). Look for the letters next to the stat icons.
Damage Types
Beyond raw physical damage, Demon's Souls features several distinct damage types. Enemies often have varying resistances and weaknesses to these, making strategic weapon choice paramount.
Physical Damage
The most common damage type, further categorized into:
- Standard: Balanced damage, effective against a wide range of enemies. Most basic weapons deal Standard damage.
- Blunt: Effective against heavily armored foes and enemies with hard exteriors (e.g., Scale Miners in Stonefang Tunnel, Armored Spiders). Weapons like Maces, Clubs, and Hammers deal Blunt damage.
- Pierce: Excellent for targeting weak points or enemies with soft armor. Rapiers, Spears, and Bows typically deal Pierce damage.
- Slash: Good for cutting through flesh and lighter armor. Katanas, Swords, and Axes are common Slash damage dealers.
Elemental & Magical Damage
These damage types are often imbued through weapon upgrades or inherent properties.
- Magic Damage: Deals damage based on your Magic stat and the weapon's Magic scaling. Highly effective against enemies vulnerable to magic, such as many demons and the Phantoms in Latria.
- Strategy: To acquire a Magic weapon early, consider upgrading a basic weapon like the Short Sword or Winged Spear at Blacksmith Ed in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1) using Moonlightstone shards. You can find Moonlightstone Shards from Crystal Lizards in Latria (3-1) or from the Prisoner Horde enemies.
- Fire Damage: Inflicts burning damage. Particularly strong against creatures susceptible to fire, like the Man Centipedes in Stonefang Tunnel or the various beasts in the Valley of Defilement.
- Strategy: The Dragon Long Sword +1 found in Stonefang Tunnel (2-2), near the Flamelurker boss arena, is an excellent early-game fire weapon. Alternatively, upgrade a weapon with Dragonstone at Blacksmith Ed. Dragonstone can be farmed from the Large Bearbugs in Stonefang Tunnel (2-2).
- Bleed Damage: While not a direct damage type on hit, some weapons can inflict a Bleed status effect, causing a burst of damage once a threshold is met.
- Strategy: The Uchigatana (found in Shrine of Storms 4-1, dropped by the Black Skeleton guarding the Adjudicator path) is a prime example of a weapon with high Bleed potential.
- Poison/Plague Damage: Similar to Bleed, these are status effects that inflict damage over time.
- Strategy: The Mercury upgrade path (using Mercurystone from the Man Centipedes in Stonefang Tunnel) can add poison to weapons. The Large Sword of Moonlight (found in the Valley of Defilement 5-2, hidden behind a secret wall) has inherent plague-inducing properties.
- Holy/Faith Damage: Deals damage scaled with your Faith stat. Highly effective against unholy creatures, particularly the demons and Black Phantoms.
- Strategy: The Blessed upgrade path (using Faintstone from the Depraved Ones in the Valley of Defilement) imbues weapons with Holy damage. The Winged Spear can be upgraded this way early on. The Istarelle (found in the Valley of Defilement 5-2, requiring Pure White World Tendency) is a powerful unique Faith weapon.
Optimizing Your Arsenal
To effectively navigate Boletaria, consider carrying a diverse set of weapons:
- Main Scaling Weapon: Your primary damage dealer, upgraded along a path that maximizes its scaling with your highest offensive stat (e.g., a Crushing Claymore for a Strength build, a Sharp Uchigatana for Dexterity).
- Elemental Backup: A weapon with inherent Fire or Magic damage, or one upgraded along those paths, to exploit enemy weaknesses. A Dragon Long Sword or a Moonlight Straight Sword are excellent choices.
- Utility Weapon: Something to handle specific situations, like a Compound Long Bow for ranged attacks, or a Mace for blunt damage against armored foes.
Experiment with different weapons and upgrade paths to find what best suits your playstyle and the challenges ahead. Remember to visit Blacksmith Boldwin in the Nexus for basic upgrades and Blacksmith Ed in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1) for advanced, elemental, and unique weapon upgrades.
