Weapon Upgrade Materials & Locations

Upgrading your weapons in Demon's Souls is crucial for survival and scaling your damage output. This section details where to find the various upgrade materials and offers strategies for efficient farming. Remember that material drops are often tied to World Tendency, with Pure Black World Tendency (PBWT) increasing drop rates for rare items but also making enemies significantly tougher.

Basic Upgrade Materials (Sharpstone & Hardstone)

These are your bread-and-butter materials for standard weapon upgrades. You'll need these in abundance, especially early on.

  • Sharpstone Shard/Large Sharpstone Shard:
    • Location: Stonefang Tunnel (World 2-1, 2-2).
    • Strategy: Dropped by Scale Miners, particularly the ones wielding pickaxes. The path from the 2-1 Archstone through the initial mining area is an excellent early-game farming route. For larger shards, delve deeper into 2-2.
    • Purchase: The Filthy Man in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1) sells these.
  • Sharpstone Chunk:
    • Location: Stonefang Tunnel (World 2-2, 2-3).
    • Strategy: Dropped by the larger Scale Miners and Crystal Lizards in 2-2. The Crystal Lizards near the Flamelurker Archstone are a good source. In 2-3, the Rock Worms also drop them.
    • Farming Tip: Equip the Large Sword of Searching (crafted from a Flamelurker Soul) or the Providential Ring to boost item discovery.
  • Pure Sharpstone:
    • Location: Stonefang Tunnel (World 2-2, 2-3).
    • Strategy: Extremely rare drop from Crystal Lizards in 2-2 (near the Flamelurker Archstone) and 2-3 (near the Dragon God arena). Also, a guaranteed drop from the Crystal Lizard nest in 2-2, accessible after defeating the Flamelurker and taking the elevator down.
    • World Tendency: Pure Black World Tendency significantly increases the chances of Crystal Lizards dropping Pure materials.
  • Hardstone Shard/Large Hardstone Shard:
    • Location: Boletarian Palace (World 1-1, 1-2).
    • Strategy: Dropped by Dreglings and Boletarian Soldiers. The initial areas of 1-1 and 1-2 are rife with these enemies.
    • Purchase: The Dregling Merchant in 1-1 and 1-2 sells these.
  • Hardstone Chunk:
    • Location: Boletarian Palace (World 1-3, 1-4).
    • Strategy: Dropped by Red Eye Knights and Fat Officials. The Red Eye Knight guarding the shortcut to the Tower Knight in 1-2 can drop them, as can the Fat Officials in 1-3.
  • Pure Hardstone:
    • Location: Boletarian Palace (World 1-4).
    • Strategy: Very rare drop from Red Eye Knights in 1-4. A guaranteed drop can be found on a corpse near the end of 1-4, just before the False King Allant boss fog.

Farming Strategies & Tips

  • World Tendency: Manipulating World Tendency is key. Pure Black World Tendency (PBWT) significantly increases rare item drop rates from enemies and Crystal Lizards, and also spawns Black Phantoms and Primeval Demons that drop valuable materials. Pure White World Tendency (PWWT) often opens new paths or spawns unique NPCs with items.
  • Item Discovery: Increase your Item Discovery stat.
    • Providential Ring: Found in 1-1 (requires PWWT to access a specific area) or chosen as a starting gift.
    • Large Sword of Searching: Crafted from the Flamelurker's Soul and a +7 curved sword. Equipping this in your off-hand (even if not wielding it) boosts item discovery.
  • Crystal Lizards: These creatures drop valuable upgrade materials but flee quickly. Learn their spawn locations and have a plan to kill them before they disappear. They respawn a limited number of times per playthrough.
  • Blacksmith Ed: Located in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1), he is your primary blacksmith for all advanced weapon upgrades. You must give him the Searing Demon Soul (from the Flamelurker) to unlock his full capabilities.
  • Stock Up: When you find a good farming spot, don't just get what you need for one upgrade. Farm enough for multiple weapons or future playthroughs.
