NPC Questlines: Bonds Forged in Suffering

Several NPCs in Demon's Souls have their own stories and requests. Completing these questlines often yields unique items, spells, miracles, or even unlocks new merchants. Be mindful that NPC questlines can be easily missed or failed if certain actions are taken out of order, or if the NPC perishes.

Patches the Hyena's Schemes

Patches is a recurring trickster who attempts to lure you into traps. Despite his nefarious nature, following his "advice" can lead to valuable items and eventually unlock him as a merchant.

  • Location 1: Stonefang Tunnel (2-2)
    • After defeating the Armor Spider, proceed through the tunnel. Patches will be near a large pit with a treasure. He'll warn you about the treasure, then kick you down.
    • Action: Survive the fall (equip the Cling Ring for more HP if in Soul Form) and defeat the Black Phantom Scorpions. Collect the Colorless Demon's Soul.
    • Aftermath: Patches will apologize and give you a Ring of Grief.
  • Location 2: Shrine of Storms (4-2)
    • After defeating the Adjudicator, proceed towards the area with the Reaper. Patches will be near a ledge overlooking a pit with a treasure. He'll encourage you to check it out.
    • Action: Approach the treasure. Patches will trigger a trap, sending you down to fight a Black Phantom Satsuki (if you haven't killed him already) and several Storm Beasts.
    • Aftermath: Survive the encounter and return to Patches. He will apologize again and give you a Great Bow.
  • Location 3: The Nexus
    • After both encounters, Patches will relocate to The Nexus, near the Archstone of the Small King.
    • Action: Speak to him. He will now act as a merchant, selling unique items such as the Dark Silver Shield, Thief's Ring, and various consumables.

Common Pitfalls: Do not attack Patches at any point, or he will become hostile and you will lose access to his merchant services.

Sage Freke's Apprentice

This questline is essential for unlocking advanced magic spells.

  • Step 1: Rescue Freke's Apprentice
    • Location: Tower of Latria (3-1), in the cell block area.
    • Action: Obtain the Special Key from the top of the tower (near the Fool's Idol boss arena, guarded by a Mind Flayer). Use it to unlock the apprentice's cell.
    • Reward: He will return to The Nexus.
  • Step 2: Rescue Sage Freke the Visionary
    • Location: Tower of Latria (3-1), in a cell on the lower level, near the first set of Mind Flayers.
    • Action: Obtain the Iron Key Ring from the top of the tower (near the Fool's Idol boss arena, in the same area as the Special Key). Use it to unlock Freke's cell.
    • Reward: Freke will return to The Nexus and offer to teach you powerful spells in exchange for Demon's Souls.

Missable Warning: If you defeat the Maneater boss (3-2) before rescuing Freke, he will still be in his cell, but you might miss out on some dialogue. More importantly, if you defeat the Old Monk (3-3) before rescuing him, he will remain trapped, and you will lose access to his advanced spells.

Hidden Areas & Unique Challenges

Boletaria is riddled with secret passages and optional zones that test your mettle and reward exploration.

The Secret Passage in Gates of Boletaria (1-1)

This early-game secret can provide a significant advantage.

  • Location: After passing through the first fog gate in 1-1, proceed until you reach the area with the two crossbowmen on the wall and the Dreglings below.
  • Action: Instead of going straight, look for a small archway on the right, blocked by debris. Roll through the debris.
  • Contents: This leads to a small, dark room with a Short Sword and a Wooden Shield. More importantly, it opens up a shortcut back to the starting area, bypassing the initial Dreglings and the Blue-Eyed Knight.
  • Strategy: This shortcut is invaluable for early-game farming or quick returns to The Nexus.

The Valley of Defilement's Hidden Swamp (5-2)

Beyond the main path of the swamp lies an even more treacherous, yet rewarding, area.

  • Location: In the second half of the Valley of Defilement (5-2), after defeating the Leechmonger. Proceed through the swamp until you reach the large island with the two Giant Depraved Ones and the path leading to the boss.
  • Action: Instead of heading towards the boss, look for a path leading further into the deep, poisonous swamp on the left side of the island (if facing the boss path). This area is extremely difficult to navigate due to the deep poison and numerous enemies.
  • Enemies: Expect to encounter multiple Giant Depraved Ones, Depraved Ones, and the dreaded Plague Babies.
  • Rewards: This area contains several valuable items, including Faintstone shards and chunks, Dark Moonstone, and most notably, the Large Sword of Moonlight.
  • Strategy:
    • Poison Resistance: Equip the Ring of Sincere Prayer or Thief's Ring (for stealth) and bring plenty of Royal Lotus to cure poison.
    • Movement: The deep swamp significantly slows movement. Consider equipping light armor or using spells like Water Veil for protection.
    • Combat: Ranged attacks are highly effective against the Plague Babies. For the Giant Depraved Ones, lure them one by one or use powerful area-of-effect spells.
    • Item Location: The Large Sword of Moonlight is found on a corpse at the very end of this hidden path, guarded by several Giant Depraved Ones.

The Penetrator's Archstone (1-4) - The Blue Dragon

While not a "hidden" area, the encounter with the Blue Dragon is an optional challenge that rewards patience and precision.

  • Location: After defeating the Penetrator in Boletarian Palace (1-3), you will gain access to the path leading to the False King.
  • Action: As you ascend the stairs towards the False King's fog gate, a massive Blue Dragon will appear, breathing fire across the bridge.
  • Challenge: You can choose to simply run past the dragon's fire breath, but defeating it yields a significant amount of souls and a special item.
  • Strategy for Defeat:
    1. First Encounter: The dragon will breathe fire across the first section of the bridge. Wait for the flames to recede, then sprint to the safety of the small alcove on the left.
    2. Second Encounter: From the alcove, you can safely target the dragon's head with a bow or magic. Use a powerful bow (e.g., White Bow, Sticky Compound Long Bow +5) and plenty of arrows (e.g., Heavy Arrows, White Arrows). Spells like Soul Ray or Firestorm (if you can get close enough) are also effective.
    3. Patience is Key: This is a battle of attrition. The dragon has a large health pool. Aim for the head for critical damage.
    4. Second Perch: After taking significant damage, the dragon will fly to a second perch further up the bridge. Repeat the process, using the next alcove for cover.
  • Rewards:
  • Common Pitfalls: Rushing across the bridge will result in instant death. Ensure you have enough arrows/MP and patience for this lengthy fight.

World Tendency Events

World Tendency is a unique mechanic in Demon's Souls that significantly alters the game world based on your actions. Achieving Pure White or Pure Black World Tendency in an Archstone unlocks special events, items, and challenges.

Pure White World Tendency (PWWT) Events

Achieving PWWT in a world typically makes enemies weaker, but also unlocks new paths or NPC encounters.

  • Boletarian Palace (1-1):
  • Stonefang Tunnel (2-2):
  • Tower of Latria (3-1):
  • Shrine of Storms (4-1):
  • Valley of Defilement (5-1):
    • Event: A ladder will appear near the start of the level, leading to a higher platform.
    • Reward: Access to the Istarelle spear.

Pure Black World Tendency (PBWT) Events

Achieving PBWT makes enemies significantly stronger, introduces Black Phantoms, and unlocks new challenges and unique items.

Strategy for World Tendency Manipulation:

  • To achieve Pure White: Defeat bosses, defeat Black Phantoms (NPC invaders), defeat Primeval Demons, and avoid dying in Body Form. Returning to The Nexus after these actions helps solidify the change.
  • To achieve Pure Black: Die in Body Form repeatedly in a specific Archstone. Each death in Body Form shifts the tendency towards black. Defeating bosses shifts it towards white, so plan your deaths accordingly.

Conclusion

Exploring these side quests and optional activities is not merely a diversion; it's an essential part of experiencing Demon's Souls to its fullest. The rewards, from powerful weapons and spells to crucial lore insights and challenging encounters, are well worth the effort. Remember to pay close attention to World Tendency, as it dictates many of these events, and always be wary of the ever-present dangers that lurk in Boletaria's forgotten corners.
