Manipulating Tendency for Optimal Playthroughs

World and Character Tendency are unique mechanics in Demon's Souls that significantly impact gameplay, enemy behavior, item availability, and even boss encounters. Understanding how to manipulate these tendencies is crucial for unlocking all content, obtaining specific items, and achieving optimal playthroughs.

World Tendency affects each of the five worlds independently. It ranges from Pure White to Pure Black. At Pure White Tendency, enemies become weaker, and new pathways or items may appear. At Pure Black Tendency, enemies become stronger, and Black Phantom versions of enemies may spawn, offering unique drops.

Character Tendency, on the other hand, relates to your character's alment, ranging from Pure White (Heroic) to Pure Black (Villainous). This affects NPC interactions, the availability of certain rings, and the appearance of specific Black Phantoms.

  • World Tendency Manipulation:
    • Defeating bosses shifts World Tendency towards White.
    • Dying in human form in a world shifts its Tendency towards Black.
    • Killing Black Phantoms shifts Tendency towards White.
    • Killing specific NPCs can shift Tendency towards Black.
  • Character Tendency Manipulation:
    • Defeating Black Phantoms shifts Character Tendency towards White.
    • Invading and killing other players shifts Character Tendency towards Black.
    • Helping other players defeat bosses shifts Character Tendency towards White.

Certain items and events are only accessible at specific Tendency levels. For example, the Northern Regalia sword requires Pure White Character Tendency, while the Brushwood Set is guarded by a Black Phantom at Pure Black World Tendency in the Smithing Grounds.

Careful planning is required to achieve desired Tendencies. It's often best to focus on one Tendency at a time for each world, completing all necessary actions before shifting to the opposite extreme. This ensures you don't miss out on crucial items or opportunities.
