Begin your Destiny 2 adventure by creating a unique Guardian. This initial character customization allows you to choose your class, race, and appearance, setting the stage for your journey through the solar system. While core gameplay is class-dependent, appearance choices are purely cosmetic.
Choosing Your Class
Your class is the most significant choice you'll make, determining your core abilities and playstyle. Each class has three subclasses, each with unique elemental powers.
- Titan: The resilient frontline warriors. They excel at defense, melee combat, and providing cover for their allies. Their class ability is the Barricade, which creates a defensive wall. Titans are known for their powerful Super abilities that can devastate enemies or provide buffs.
- Hunter: Agile and precise combatants. They are masters of ranged combat, stealth, and mobility. Their class ability is the Dodge, which can be used for evasion or to reload their weapons. Hunters often have Supers focused on precision damage or crowd control.
- Warlock: Masters of the arcane, wielding the power of the Light and Darkness. They excel at area-of-effect damage, support, and utility. Their class ability is the Rift, which can either heal allies or grant them a damage buff. Warlocks have some of the most visually impressive and powerful Super abilities.
Each class has access to Solar, Arc, Void, Stasis, and Strand subclasses, offering a wide variety of playstyles within each class.
Choosing Your Race
Your race determines your Guardian's appearance but has no impact on gameplay mechanics, stats, or abilities.
- Human: The most common and relatable race, offering a familiar aesthetic.
- Awoken: A mysterious race born from a union between humans and the Reef's ancient beings. They possess a unique, ethereal appearance.
- Exo: Advanced robotic beings with human consciousness. They have a distinct mechanical look.
You can have one character of each class, and each can be a different race.
Appearance Customization
Once you've chosen your class and race, you'll enter the character creator:
- Gender: You can choose a male or female appearance for your Guardian, regardless of race.
- Facial Features: Select from several hairstyles, facial structures, eye colors, skin tones, and markings.
- Body Type: While not as detailed as facial features, you can select a general body type.
Tip: Don't stress too much about perfection here. You can change your Guardian's appearance (excluding class and race) at any time by visiting the "Change Appearance" option on the character screen in the Director.
Starting the Game
After finalizing your Guardian's appearance, you'll be dropped into the introductory mission of the "New Light" experience. This mission serves as a tutorial, guiding you through basic movement, combat, and the initial narrative setup.
Creating Multiple Guardians
You are allowed to create up to three Guardians per platform account. This is highly recommended for players who want to experience different class playstyles or maximize their weekly loot opportunities, as many endgame activities reward powerful gear once per character per week.
