Side Missions
While the main narrative of Dishonored offers a compelling journey through Dunwall, the city is brimming with optional side missions that enrich the lore, offer unique challenges, and reward players with valuable resources, runes, and bone charms. Engaging with these missions can significantly alter your approach to the main objectives, providing alternative paths or powerful upgrades. This section details the most prominent side missions and offers comprehensive walkthroughs to ensure you don't miss a single secret.
Granny Rags' Quests
Granny Rags, a mysterious and unsettling old woman, offers a series of macabre tasks throughout the game. Completing her quests often involves morally ambiguous choices but yields significant rewards, including runes and a unique bone charm. Be warned: her requests often involve dealing with unsavory characters or performing unsettling rituals.
Mission 1: "Gentlemen Callers"
- Location: Distillery District, near the start of the "High Overseer Campbell" mission. You'll find Granny Rags in her apartment, identifiable by the distinctive red door and the eerie atmosphere.
- Objective: Deal with the "gentlemen callers" harassing Granny Rags. These are three thugs loitering outside her apartment.
- Strategy:
- Non-Lethal: The most straightforward non-lethal approach is to choke out each thug individually. Use the cover of the environment (dumpsters, corners) to isolate them. You can also use Sleep Darts if you have them. Remember to hide their bodies to avoid detection.
- Lethal: If you're aiming for a high chaos playthrough, you can dispatch them with your sword or pistol. Consider using a Spring Razor to take out multiple targets quickly if they are grouped together.
- Reward: A Rune, found on her table after completing the task.
Mission 2: "The Sewers"
- Location: Flooded District, during the "Return to the Tower" mission. Granny Rags will appear in the sewers, near the entrance to the Hound Pits Pub.
- Objective: Retrieve her "lucky charm" from a nest of Weepers.
- Strategy:
- The sewers are infested with Weepers. Approach cautiously, as they can overwhelm you in groups.
- The charm is located in a small, flooded chamber. You'll need to navigate through the Weepers to reach it.
- Non-Lethal: Use Sleep Darts or carefully choke out the Weepers. You can also use the environment to your advantage, luring them into water or using Blink to bypass them entirely.
- Lethal: Incendiary Bolts or explosive devices are effective against Weepers. Headshots with the pistol are also a quick way to dispatch them.
- Once you have the charm, return it to Granny Rags.
- Reward: A unique Bone Charm.
Mission 3: "The Slackjaw Confrontation" (High Chaos Only)
This mission is a pivotal moment that can significantly impact your chaos rating and the ending of the game. It occurs during the "Flooded District" mission if you have consistently helped Granny Rags and have a high chaos rating.
- Location: Flooded District, near the end of the mission, where Slackjaw is holding Granny Rags captive.
- Objective: Choose between helping Granny Rags or Slackjaw.
- Strategy:
- Help Granny Rags: If you side with Granny Rags, you will need to defeat Slackjaw and his thugs. This is a challenging fight. Granny Rags will assist you with her powers. After the fight, she will reward you with a Rune and a powerful Bone Charm. This path generally contributes to a higher chaos ending.
- Help Slackjaw: If you side with Slackjaw, you will need to defeat Granny Rags. She is a formidable opponent with powerful magical abilities. The key to defeating her non-lethally is to burn her "lucky charm" in the furnace nearby. This will weaken her, allowing you to choke her out. If you choose to kill her, she will drop a Rune and a Bone Charm. Siding with Slackjaw can lead to a lower chaos ending, especially if you've been playing stealthily.
- Reward: A Rune and a Bone Charm, regardless of your choice, but the specific items may vary.
The Bottle Street Gang's Debt
During the "House of Pleasure" mission, you can encounter Slackjaw, the leader of the Bottle Street Gang. He offers a side mission that involves dealing with a rival gang and retrieving a key item.
- Location: Golden Cat Bathhouse area, specifically in the Distillery District. Slackjaw can be found in his hideout.
- Objective: Retrieve the combination to the safe in the Art Dealer's apartment from the Pendletons.
- Strategy:
- After speaking with Slackjaw, head towards the Golden Cat. The Pendletons are located within the bathhouse.
- The combination is held by one of the Pendleton twins. You can interrogate him non-lethally by choking him out and then interacting with his unconscious body.
- Alternatively, you can find a note with the combination in a hidden location within the Golden Cat, often near the twins' private quarters.
- Once you have the combination, return to Slackjaw.
- Reward: Information about the Art Dealer's safe and a Rune. This mission also opens up an alternative path to dealing with the Pendleton twins.
The Art Dealer's Safe
This side objective is directly tied to Slackjaw's quest and offers valuable loot.
- Location: Art Dealer's apartment, accessible during the "House of Pleasure" mission.
- Objective: Open the Art Dealer's safe.
- Strategy:
- If you completed Slackjaw's quest, you will have the safe combination.
- The safe contains a significant amount of gold and a valuable painting.
- If you did not complete Slackjaw's quest, you can still find the combination by exploring the Art Dealer's apartment thoroughly. Look for clues and notes hidden in drawers, under beds, or behind paintings.
- Reward: Gold and a valuable painting, which can be sold for additional funds.
