Roshan's Abilities & Mechanics

Master Roshan in Dota 2. Learn his abilities, spawn timers, Aegis of the Immortal, Cheese, and strategic tips for securing this vital objective.

Roshan's Abilities & Mechanics

Roshan, the Immortal Guardian, is the most powerful neutral creep in Dota 2. Defeating him grants the victors the Aegis of the Immortal, a game-changing item that allows a hero to respawn upon death. Understanding Roshan's mechanics, abilities, and spawn timers is crucial for strategic decision-making and securing crucial advantages.

Roshan resides in a pit located in the river between the Radiant and Dire bases. He is a formidable opponent, and his defeat is a significant objective for both teams.

Roshan's Abilities and Attacks

Roshan possesses a unique set of abilities and attacks that make him a challenging foe:

  • Melee Attack: Roshan hits hard with his massive club, dealing significant physical damage. His attack damage scales with game time.
  • Slam: Roshan periodically slams the ground, dealing AoE damage and applying a debuff that reduces the armor of all units in the area. This makes him particularly dangerous to multiple heroes attacking him simultaneously. The Slam deals 100 damage and reduces armor by 5 for 5 seconds.
  • Spell Immunity: Roshan is immune to most magical damage and disables. This means that abilities like Hex, Stun, or Silence are ineffective against him. However, he can be affected by certain damage-over-time effects and debuffs that don't rely on direct spell cast.
  • High Health and Armor: Roshan has an exceptionally large health pool and high armor, making him resistant to physical damage. His health and armor also increase as the game progresses.

The Aegis of the Immortal

The primary reward for defeating Roshan is the Aegis of the Immortal. This item is dropped by Roshan and can be picked up by any allied hero. When the hero carrying the Aegis dies, they will respawn at their fountain with a portion of their health and mana, effectively granting them a second life. The Aegis has a limited duration (6 minutes) and can be consumed or lost if the hero dies again without it being refreshed.

Roshan's Spawn Timers and Mechanics

Roshan's respawn timer is a critical element of Dota 2 strategy:

  • First Spawn: Roshan is alive from the start of the game.
  • First Respawn: After being defeated, Roshan will respawn between 8 and 11 minutes later. The exact respawn time is randomized within this window.
  • Subsequent Respawns: After the first respawn, Roshan will respawn between 8 and 11 minutes after his previous death.
  • Cheese: Upon respawning, Roshan also drops a Cheese. This is a consumable item that restores 2500 health and 1000 mana to the hero who consumes it. It can be a lifesaver for heroes who need a significant burst of sustain.
  • Aghanim's Shard and Blessing: Starting from the 20th minute, Roshan will drop an Aghanim's Shard upon death. From the 30th minute onwards, he will also drop an Aghanim's Blessing, which grants a permanent upgrade to a hero's ultimate ability.

Strategic Considerations for Roshan

Taking Roshan is a high-risk, high-reward objective. Teams must consider:

  • Vision: Warding the Roshan pit and its entrances is crucial to prevent enemy ambushes and to safely engage Roshan.
  • Team Composition: Heroes with high single-target damage, sustain, and the ability to deal with Roshan's armor reduction are ideal.
  • Timing: Attempting Roshan too early can be disastrous if the enemy team is aware and can contest. Waiting for key items or ultimates can increase success rates.
  • Counter-Ganking: Be prepared for the enemy team to attempt to steal the Aegis or punish your team during the Roshan fight.

Successfully securing Roshan can provide a significant momentum swing, but it requires careful planning, coordination, and execution.
