Fade Rifts by Region

Closing Fade Rifts is a core activity in Dragon Age: Inquisition, providing valuable Influence, Power, and experience points. Each region presents unique challenges and enemy compositions. This section details strategies and locations for all rifts, organized by the order you'll likely encounter them.

The Hinterlands

The Hinterlands is your first major open-world area and introduces you to Fade Rifts. Expect a mix of Lesser Shades, Wraiths, and occasionally a Pride Demon or Despair Demon as you progress. Focus on closing the smaller rifts first to gain Power and unlock new areas.

Rift near Crossroads

  • Location: Directly south of the Crossroads camp, near the main road leading to Redcliffe.
  • Enemies: Lesser Shades, Wraiths.
  • Strategy: This is likely your first rift. Position your melee characters to tank the Shades, while ranged characters focus on the Wraiths. Use your Inquisitor's Mark of the Rift ability when the enemies are grouped for maximum effect.
  • Reward: 100 XP, 1 Power, 40 Influence.

Rift at the Upper Lake Camp

  • Location: East of the Upper Lake Camp, nestled in a small valley.
  • Enemies: Lesser Shades, Rage Demons.
  • Strategy: Rage Demons can be dangerous due to their fiery attacks. Have a mage with Winter's Grasp or Fade Step (with the upgrade that chills) to freeze or slow them down. Prioritize taking down the Rage Demons before they can unleash their area-of-effect attacks.
  • Reward: 120 XP, 1 Power, 45 Influence.

Rift near Lady Shayna's Valley

  • Location: Southeast of Lady Shayna's Valley, accessible after clearing the initial bandit camps.
  • Enemies: Wraiths, Despair Demons.
  • Strategy: Despair Demons can freeze your party members. Ensure your healer (Vivienne or Solas are excellent choices here) is ready to dispel status effects or heal through the damage. Focus fire on the Despair Demon to prevent it from debilitating your party.
  • Reward: 150 XP, 2 Power, 50 Influence.

Storm Coast

The Storm Coast introduces more challenging demons, often in tighter spaces. Be prepared for increased numbers and tougher elite enemies.

Rift at the Apostate's Landing

  • Location: On the small island accessible via the bridge from Apostate's Landing.
  • Enemies: Lesser Shades, Rage Demons, a Pride Demon (second wave).
  • Strategy: This rift can be tricky due to the Pride Demon. Focus all your damage on the Pride Demon as soon as it appears. Use abilities that stun or knock down to interrupt its powerful attacks. Keep your party spread out to minimize damage from its area-of-effect abilities.
  • Reward: 250 XP, 2 Power, 75 Influence.

Rift in the Dragon's Breath Cavern

  • Location: Inside the Dragon's Breath Cavern, near the end of the cave system.
  • Enemies: Wraiths, Despair Demons, a Terror Demon.
  • Strategy: The Terror Demon can fear your party, making them vulnerable. Equip any accessories that grant fear resistance if you have them. Have a warrior with Challenge or War Cry to draw aggro, and a rogue to quickly burst down the Terror Demon.
  • Reward: 300 XP, 3 Power, 80 Influence.

Forbidden Oasis

The Forbidden Oasis features many rifts, often guarded by cultists or in challenging terrain. Many rifts here are part of the "Still Waters" quest line.

Rift at the Oasis Entrance

  • Location: Just past the initial camp, near the first set of cultists.
  • Enemies: Lesser Shades, Wraiths, occasionally a Rage Demon.
  • Strategy: A relatively straightforward rift. Use the terrain to your advantage, drawing enemies into choke points if possible.
  • Reward: 180 XP, 1 Power, 60 Influence.

Rift in the Western Canyon

  • Location: Deep within the western canyons, often requiring some platforming to reach.
  • Enemies: Despair Demons, Wraiths, a Fear Demon (second wave).
  • Strategy: Fear Demons are similar to Terror Demons but can be more persistent with their fear effects. Ensure your party has good crowd control to keep them locked down. Consider bringing a mage with Barrier to protect against incoming damage.
  • Reward: 280 XP, 2 Power, 70 Influence.

Crestwood

Crestwood's rifts are often found in the flooded areas or near the abandoned village. Expect a mix of standard demons and the occasional higher-tier threat.

Rift in the Flooded Caves

  • Location: Inside the flooded caves accessible after draining the lake.
  • Enemies: Lesser Shades, Despair Demons, a Terror Demon.
  • Strategy: The confined space of the caves can make this rift challenging. Focus on taking out the Despair Demons quickly to prevent freezing, then concentrate on the Terror Demon. Area-of-effect abilities are very effective here.
  • Reward: 320 XP, 3 Power, 85 Influence.

Rift near the Old Crestwood Village

  • Location: In the ruins of the Old Crestwood Village, often surrounded by undead.
  • Enemies: Wraiths, Rage Demons, a Pride Demon.
  • Strategy: This rift can be tough due to the Pride Demon and the potential for additional undead enemies. Clear any surrounding undead first if possible. Then, engage the rift, prioritizing the Pride Demon with all available burst damage and crowd control.
  • Reward: 350 XP, 3 Power, 90 Influence.
