Combat in Dragon Quest IV is turn-based. Each character and enemy takes a turn, with speed determining the order. On your turn, you can choose from several commands: 'Fight' (physical attack), 'Spell' (use magic), 'Item' (use an item from inventory), 'Defend' (reduce damage taken), 'Flee' (attempt to escape battle), or 'Tactics' (for AI-controlled party members). Early in the game, especially in Chapters 1-4, you'll primarily rely on physical attacks and basic healing spells.

Once you reach Chapter 5, the 'Tactics' system becomes available for your AI-controlled party members. You can set their behavior to 'Show No Mercy' (attack aggressively), 'Fight Wisely' (balance offense and defense), 'Focus on Healing' (prioritize healing), 'Don't Use MP' (conserve magic), or 'Follow Orders' (manual control). While 'Follow Orders' gives you complete control, it can be tedious for random encounters. 'Fight Wisely' is often a good default, but adjust tactics based on the situation. Always keep an eye on your HP and MP, and don't hesitate to use healing items or spells. Status effects like Sleep, Poison, and Paralysis can be debilitating, so have remedies ready. Exploiting enemy weaknesses (e.g., using fire spells on ice monsters) is also key to efficient combat.
