Inn and Church Services
As you journey across the world of Dragon Quest IV, you'll frequently encounter Inns and Churches in towns and villages. These establishments are crucial for maintaining your party's health, managing your progress, and recovering from the trials of battle. Understanding how to utilize their services effectively will be key to your success.
Inn Services: Rest and Recovery
Inns are your primary source of healing and MP restoration outside of using items or spells. A good night's rest at an Inn will fully restore the HP and MP of all active party members, ensuring you're ready for the next day's adventures.
- Full Recovery: For a small fee, typically ranging from 8 to 20 Gold depending on the town and your party size, your entire party will be fully healed of all HP and MP. This is often more cost-effective than using multiple healing items.
- Strategic Resting: It's wise to rest at an Inn before venturing into a new dungeon, a challenging area, or immediately after a tough boss battle. This prevents you from wasting valuable healing items and ensures your spellcasters have their full MP reserves.
- Information Gathering: Sometimes, staying at an Inn can trigger unique dialogue or events. Pay attention to what innkeepers or other patrons might say, as they can offer hints about your next objective or local rumors.
Church Services: Blessings and Safeguards
Churches are sacred places offering spiritual services that are vital for your party's well-being and progress. Unlike Inns, most Church services are free, making them an invaluable resource.
Speaking with the Priest:
Approach the Priest at the altar to access the following options:
- Confess (Save your Game): This is arguably the most important service. Always save your game frequently, especially before entering dangerous areas, after significant progress, or before confronting a boss. There are no autosaves in Dragon Quest IV, so relying on this service is paramount.
- Resurrect: If a party member falls in battle and their HP drops to 0, they become incapacitated. The Priest can bring them back to life for a fee. The cost of resurrection increases with the character's level. For example, resurrecting a low-level character might cost 20 Gold, while a high-level hero could cost upwards of 200 Gold.
- Purify: This service cures various status ailments that cannot be healed by standard spells or items.
- Poison: Cures the "Poison" status, which drains HP each turn in battle and when walking on the world map.
- Paralysis: Cures the "Paralysis" status, rendering a character unable to act in battle.
- Curse: Removes equipment curses, which can significantly lower stats or prevent a character from acting. Cursed equipment often has negative effects until removed by a Priest.
- Exorcise: If a character is afflicted with the "Possessed" status (often caused by certain enemy spells or items), they may act erratically in battle or even attack their allies. The Priest can perform an exorcism to remove this affliction. This service is typically free.
Pro-Tip: Always prioritize saving your game at a Church before exploring a new dungeon or facing a challenging enemy. If your party is wiped out, you'll return to your last save point, potentially losing a lot of progress. Don't be afraid to backtrack to a nearby town for a quick save and heal!
