Grottoes are randomly generated dungeons that become available in the post-game. They are accessed via treasure maps found from defeating certain monsters or completing specific quests. Each grotto has a unique name, level range, and a boss at the end. The deeper the grotto, the stronger the enemies and the better the rewards, including rare alchemy ingredients and powerful equipment. Grottoes are the primary source of experience and gold in the post-game, making them essential for leveling up your party and mastering vocations.

At the end of some high-level grottoes, you'll encounter Legacy Bosses – powerful versions of iconic bosses from previous Dragon Quest titles. These battles are incredibly challenging and require careful strategy, optimal gear, and high-level characters. Defeating Legacy Bosses rewards you with unique equipment and special items. Collecting all the Legacy Boss maps and defeating them all is one of the ultimate challenges in Dragon Quest IX, offering hundreds of hours of additional gameplay.
