Dragon Quest IX features a unique 'Tag Mode' that allows you to connect with other players wirelessly. When your DS is in sleep mode with Tag Mode activated, it will exchange data with other nearby Dragon Quest IX players. This can result in receiving guest characters at your Quester's Rest, who might offer special items or quests. You can also receive new treasure maps for grottoes from other players, significantly expanding your post-game content.

The game also supports full multiplayer co-op, allowing up to four players to explore the world and battle monsters together. This is an excellent way to tackle challenging grottoes or simply enjoy the game with friends. To initiate multiplayer, one player hosts a game, and others join. While in multiplayer, You can assist each other in battles, share items, and explore the host's world. Communication is key for effective multiplayer sessions, especially in tougher dungeons. Multiplayer adds a fantastic social dimension to the Dragon Quest experience.
