Magic & Abilities

In Dragon Quest VII, your party's magical prowess and combat abilities are deeply intertwined with the Vocation system. Unlike traditional RPGs where characters learn spells by leveling up, most spells and skills in DQVII are acquired by mastering specific Vocations. This section will guide you through understanding and optimizing your party's magical and physical capabilities.

Understanding Vocations and Skill Acquisition

Vocations are unlocked after reaching the Dharma Temple. Upon changing to a new Vocation, characters will gain experience towards mastering that Vocation by participating in battles. Each Vocation has a set number of ranks, and reaching new ranks unlocks new spells and abilities. These learned spells and abilities are permanent and can be used even after changing to a different Vocation, making strategic Vocation progression crucial for building a versatile party.

Basic Vocation Progression Strategy:

  1. Early Game Focus (Dharma Temple onward): As soon as you unlock Vocations, prioritize having at least one character in a healing Vocation (like Priest) and one in a magic-damage Vocation (like Mage). Maribel is an excellent candidate for Mage due to her high Wisdom and MP. Ruff, with his balanced stats, can excel in physical Vocations like Warrior or Martial Artist. The Hero is flexible but often benefits from a Warrior or Paladin path.
  2. Hybridization: Don't be afraid to switch Vocations frequently. For instance, mastering a Warrior Vocation for powerful physical attacks and then switching to a Priest Vocation will allow your character to both deal damage and heal, creating a highly adaptable party member.
  3. Advanced Vocations: Higher-tier Vocations (e.g., Paladin, Sage, Champion) require mastering specific basic Vocations first. Plan your progression to unlock these powerful classes. For example, to become a Paladin, a character must master both Warrior and Priest.

Key Spells and Abilities to Prioritize

While all spells and abilities have their uses, some are exceptionally valuable throughout your journey. Here are some recommendations:

Essential Healing & Support Spells:

  • Heal/Midheal/Fullheal: Acquired through the Priest Vocation. These are your bread-and-butter healing spells. Prioritize getting Midheal on at least two characters early on.
  • Multiheal: A powerful group healing spell, typically learned by advanced healing Vocations like Sage or by mastering the Healslime monster Vocation. Invaluable for boss fights and tough encounters.
  • Snooze/Sleep: Learned by the Mage Vocation. Useful for crowd control, especially against multiple strong enemies.
  • Buff/Sap: Buff (increases defense) and Sap (decreases enemy defense) are learned by various Vocations, including Warrior and Priest. Crucial for mitigating damage and increasing your party's offensive output during boss battles.
  • Oomph: Significantly boosts a single ally's attack power. Learned by the Luminary Vocation or by mastering certain monster Vocations. A game-changer for physical attackers.

Recommended Offensive Spells & Abilities:

  • Frizz/Sizz/Bang/Crack Lines: Learned by the Mage Vocation. These elemental spells are your primary source of magic damage. Upgrade to their "mid" and "mega" versions as soon as possible.
  • Boom/Kaboom: Powerful area-of-effect spells, typically learned by the Mage and advanced magic Vocations. Excellent for clearing groups of enemies quickly.
  • Blade Dance: A physical ability learned by the Martial Artist Vocation. Hits multiple times for significant damage.
  • Sword Dance: A more powerful version of Blade Dance, often learned by advanced physical Vocations like Gladiator or Hero.
  • Kamikazee: While risky (causes the user to faint), this ability, learned by the Warrior Vocation, can deal massive damage to all enemies, potentially turning the tide in desperate situations. Use with caution!

MP Management and Item Usage

Magic Point (MP) management is vital in Dragon Quest VII. Unlike HP, MP does not regenerate after battle, making resourcefulness key.

  • Chimaera Wing: An early-game item that allows you to instantly return to the last visited town. Stock up on these from item shops (e.g., Estard, Ballymolloy) to quickly return to replenish MP at an inn.
  • Magic Water: Restores a small amount of MP. Can be found in chests, dropped by certain monsters, or purchased later in the game.
  • Elfin Elixir: Restores a large amount of MP to a single ally. A rarer item, often found in late-game dungeons or as rare monster drops. Conserve these for critical moments.
  • Yggdrasil Dew: Fully restores HP and MP to all allies. Extremely rare, usually found in very limited quantities or as rewards for challenging quests. Save these for the toughest boss fights.
  • Inn Stays: The most reliable way to fully restore HP and MP. Always return to an inn after prolonged dungeon crawls or before major boss encounters.

Monster Vocations

Beyond human Vocations, characters can also master Monster Vocations by collecting Monster Hearts. These hearts are rare drops from specific monsters. Mastering a Monster Vocation often grants unique and powerful abilities not found in human Vocations.

  • Healslime Heart: Allows a character to become a Healslime. Mastering this Vocation grants access to powerful healing spells, including Multiheal, making it an excellent choice for a dedicated healer. Healslimes are found in areas like the Estard region in the past.
  • Slime Heart: A basic monster Vocation that can be a stepping stone to more advanced monster classes. Slimes are ubiquitous in early game areas.
  • Golem Heart: Grants access to high defense and powerful physical attacks. Golems can be found in places like the Grondal region.

Experiment with different Vocation combinations and monster hearts to discover powerful synergies and tailor your party to your preferred playstyle. Remember, adaptability is your greatest asset in the world of Dragon Quest VII!
