Vocations / Class System Details
Welcome, Fragment Finder! Dragon Quest VII's Vocation system is one of its most defining and rewarding features, allowing for immense customization and strategic depth. Mastering it is key to overcoming the game's toughest challenges. Unlike traditional RPGs where characters are locked into roles, DQVII allows almost every character to learn nearly every Vocation, gaining new spells, skills, and stat bonuses along the way.
Unlocking the Vocation System
The Vocation system isn't available from the start. You'll first need to progress through the story until you reach the Alltrades Abbey in the past. This pivotal location becomes accessible after restoring the Estard region's past and then traveling to the Pilgrim's Rest area. Once you've completed the events at Alltrades Abbey, the system becomes available for all characters in your party.
- Step 1: Progress Story - Continue through the main narrative until you restore the Estard region's past.
- Step 2: Reach Pilgrim's Rest - After restoring Estard, head to the Pilgrim's Rest area on the world map.
- Step 3: Access Alltrades Abbey - Follow the path from Pilgrim's Rest to the north to find Alltrades Abbey.
- Step 4: Complete Abbey Events - Engage with the NPCs and complete the necessary story events within Alltrades Abbey. Upon completion, the Vocation Master will explain the system, and you'll be able to assign Vocations.
How Vocations Work
Once unlocked, you can change a character's Vocation at any Alltrades Abbey (both past and present). Each Vocation has a set number of ranks, typically 8, which are advanced by winning battles. The crucial detail is that only battles where your character's current level is below a certain threshold will count towards Vocation experience. This threshold varies by Vocation, but for most basic human Vocations, it's around Level 20. Monster Vocations often have higher thresholds.
- Vocation XP Gain: Earned by winning battles. The higher the rank, the more battles required.
- Level Cap for Vocation XP: Pay close attention to your character's current level. If a character is too high a level for their current Vocation, they will not gain Vocation experience from battles, even if they participate. This is a common pitfall for new players!
- Skills and Spells: Each rank in a Vocation grants new skills or spells. These are permanently learned and can be used regardless of your current Vocation (with some exceptions for advanced hybrid skills).
- Stat Adjustments: Vocations also apply temporary stat modifiers. For example, a Warrior Vocation will boost Strength, while a Mage Vocation will boost Wisdom and Magic Power. These adjustments are active only while the character is in that Vocation.

Monster Vocations
Monster Vocations are unique and offer distinct advantages, often with higher level caps for Vocation experience. To unlock a Monster Vocation, you need to collect a specific number of Monster Hearts for that particular monster type. These hearts are rare drops from defeating monsters or can be found in treasure chests.
- Acquiring Monster Hearts:
- Method 1: Defeat Monsters - Certain monsters have a chance to drop their respective hearts upon defeat. This is often a lengthy grind.
- Method 2: Treasure Chests - Some Monster Hearts are found in specific treasure chests throughout the world, often in later areas or optional dungeons. For example, a Slime Heart can be found in the Dharma Temple's basement after certain story events.
- Method 3: Lucky Panel / Casino - The Lucky Panel minigame in the Buccanham Casino sometimes offers Monster Hearts as prizes.
- Benefits of Monster Vocations:
- Unique Skills: Many monster skills are exclusive and very powerful, like the Slime's Meditate (full HP restore) or the Golem's Stone's Throw.
- Stat Boosts: Often provide significant stat increases, especially HP and Strength for physical monsters, or Wisdom and MP for magical ones.
- Higher Level Caps: Generally, Monster Vocations allow for Vocation experience gain at much higher character levels than human Vocations, making them excellent for endgame grinding.
- Recommended Early Monster Vocations:
- Slime: Requires 1 Slime Heart. Easy to obtain early on. Provides good stat boosts and the invaluable Meditate skill. Slimes are common in the Gröndal region.
- Golem: Requires 1 Golem Heart. Offers massive HP and Strength boosts, making any character a formidable tank. Golems can be found in the Dharma Temple region.
The Ultimate Vocation: Hero
The Hero Vocation is the pinnacle of the Vocation system. It requires mastering all five advanced human Vocations (Gladiator, Paladin, Sage, Ranger, Luminary) on a single character. This is a monumental task, but the rewards are well worth it.
- Unlocking Hero: Master Gladiator, Paladin, Sage, Ranger, and Luminary with one character.
- Hero's Power: The Hero Vocation grants incredible stat bonuses, access to the most powerful spells and skills from all previous Vocations, and unique Hero-specific abilities like GigaSlash, Kafrizzle, and Magic Burst.
- Strategy: It's often best to focus on one character to become the Hero first, as the stat bonuses and versatile skillset make them an unstoppable force. Maribel, due to her early access to magic, is a strong candidate for Sage, and then can branch out to other Vocations. Ruff's high agility makes him a good candidate for Fighter/Thief lines.
Efficient Vocation Grinding Strategies
Grinding Vocations can be time-consuming, but these tips will help you optimize your efforts:
- Mind the Level Cap: Always check the Vocation's level cap. If your character is above it, switch to a different Vocation or grind with lower-level characters. You can view the level cap for each Vocation in the Vocation menu at Alltrades Abbey.
- Early Game Grinding Spot: The area around Dharma Temple (in the past) is an excellent early-to-mid-game spot. The monsters here provide good experience and are generally manageable.
- Mid-to-Late Game Grinding Spot: The Cave to Another World (accessible later in the game) offers strong monsters and good Vocation experience.
- Endgame Grinding Spot: The Bonus Dungeon / Traveler's Tablets areas often contain monsters with high Vocation experience yields and higher level caps, perfect for mastering advanced and Monster Vocations.
- Utilize Auto-Battle: For repetitive grinding, set your party to "Fight Wisely" or "Show No Mercy" to speed up battles.
- Equip Vocation-Boosting Gear (if available): While rare, some equipment might offer minor boosts to Vocation experience. Keep an eye out for them.
- Prioritize Skills: Focus on mastering Vocations that grant essential skills and spells first, such as healing from Priest or powerful attacks from Warrior/Fighter.
By understanding and strategically utilizing the Vocation system, you'll transform your party into a formidable force, ready to face any challenge Dragon Quest VII throws your way!
