Hero Types & Weaknesses
As a Dungeon Keeper, understanding the various Hero types and their inherent weaknesses is paramount to your success. These meddling do-gooders will attempt to invade your dungeon, steal your gold, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. By exploiting their specific vulnerabilities, you can turn their noble intentions into a swift, painful demise.
Basic Hero Types and Counter-Strategies
Heroes generally fall into a few archetypes, each requiring a tailored approach. Ignoring these distinctions will lead to unnecessary losses among your precious creatures.
- Monks: These pious individuals are often the first to arrive. They are relatively weak in direct combat but can heal themselves and others.
- Weakness: Low health and attack. Highly susceptible to overwhelming numbers.
- Strategy: Engage them with multiple Imps or Goblins. A well-placed Boulder trap can also thin their ranks quickly before they can heal. For larger groups, consider dropping a Horned Reaper or a Bile Demon directly into their path.
- Fairies: Agile and annoying, Fairies can fly over traps and often target your weaker creatures or even your Dungeon Heart if left unchecked.
- Weakness: Low physical defense. Vulnerable to ranged attacks and area-of-effect spells.
- Strategy: Use creatures with ranged attacks like Warlocks or Dark Mistresses. The "Lightning" spell is highly effective at zapping multiple Fairies out of the sky. If they manage to reach your heart, use the "Call to Arms" spell to rally your strongest defenders.
- Dwarves: Stubborn and well-armored, Dwarves are a common sight. They are good at digging and can quickly breach your dungeon walls.
- Weakness: Slow movement speed. Susceptible to traps and being lured into unfavorable positions.
- Strategy: Place strategically located Spike traps or Boulder traps in their expected path. If they start digging, use the "Collapse" spell on the walls they are excavating to crush them. Pit traps are also excellent for isolating and eliminating small groups.
- Knights: The quintessential hero, Knights are strong in melee and possess decent armor. They often lead the charge.
- Weakness: Can be flanked. Vulnerable to magical attacks and powerful single-target damage.
- Strategy: Engage with high-damage creatures like Horned Reapers or Dragons. Dark Mistresses can also be effective with their magical attacks. The "Inferno" spell can soften up groups of Knights before your creatures move in for the kill. Consider using a Guard Post with a powerful creature to bottleneck them.
- Wizards: These magic-users can unleash devastating spells from a distance, making them a significant threat.
- Weakness: Frail in close combat. Limited melee defense.
- Strategy: Prioritize eliminating Wizards quickly. Use fast-moving creatures like Skeletons or Spiders to tie them up in melee. The "Lightning" spell is excellent for interrupting their spellcasting and dealing direct damage. If you have a powerful creature like a Horned Reaper, drop it directly onto the Wizard for an instant kill.
- Archers: Similar to Wizards, Archers attack from a distance but rely on physical projectiles. They can quickly whittle down your creatures' health.
- Weakness: Poor melee defense. Can be overwhelmed in close quarters.
- Strategy: Rush Archers with melee creatures. Bile Demons, with their high health, can tank arrows while your other creatures close in. The "Speed" spell cast on your attacking creatures can help them reach the Archers before too much damage is done.
Advanced Hero Encounters and Tactical Considerations
As you progress through the campaign, you'll encounter more formidable heroes, sometimes in larger, more coordinated groups. These require more sophisticated tactics.
The Hero Party
Often, heroes will invade in mixed parties, combining melee, ranged, and support units. This is where your dungeon layout and trap placement become critical.
- Chokepoints: Design your dungeon with natural chokepoints. A narrow corridor leading to your Dungeon Heart, lined with Boulder traps, Spike traps, and guarded by a powerful creature in a Guard Post, can decimate an entire hero party.
- Luring: Use a single, expendable creature (like an Imp) to lure heroes into a prepared trap corridor. Once they are engaged, drop your heavy hitters from the "Hand of Evil" directly into the fray.
- Spell Synergy: Combine spells for maximum effect. For example, use "Lightning" to stun and damage a group, then follow up with "Inferno" for sustained damage, or "Heal" on your own creatures to keep them fighting.
- Torture Chamber: Capturing heroes in your Torture Chamber can be highly beneficial. Tortured heroes will eventually convert to your side, offering valuable insight into enemy weaknesses or even joining your ranks as powerful creatures. Prioritize capturing high-level Knights or Wizards.
Specific High-Level Heroes
Certain levels feature unique or exceptionally powerful heroes that demand special attention.
- The Avatar: This ultimate hero is a force to be reckoned with. The Avatar possesses immense health, powerful attacks, and resistance to many forms of damage.
- Weakness: None easily exploited. Requires overwhelming force and strategic attrition.
- Strategy: The Avatar is a war of attrition. You will need a fully trained army of your strongest creatures (Horned Reapers, Dragons, Dark Mistresses, Bile Demons). Lure the Avatar into a large, open area where all your creatures can engage simultaneously. Utilize every offensive spell at your disposal, particularly "Inferno" and "Lightning." Consider sacrificing weaker creatures to distract the Avatar while your heavy hitters deal damage. The "Call to Arms" spell is essential to keep your forces focused.
