Dungeon Heart Protection

Your Dungeon Heart is the literal heart of your operation, and its destruction means game over. Protecting it is paramount, especially as you advance to more challenging levels with aggressive hero incursions. A well-defended Dungeon Heart allows you to recover from setbacks and maintain your evil empire.

Initial Defenses: The Early Game

In the early stages of a map, resources are scarce, but basic protection is still crucial. Don't leave your Heart exposed!

  • Moat Construction: As soon as you have the Gold, dig a 1-tile wide moat around your Dungeon Heart. This forces melee attackers to path around, buying you precious time. Remember, the moat should be at least 2 tiles away from the Heart itself to prevent ranged attackers from firing directly over it.
  • Basic Guard Post: Designate a small area directly in front of your Heart as a Guard Post. Drop your starting Imps and any early creatures like Bile Demons or Flies here. Even a few low-level creatures can deter initial hero scouts.
  • Reinforced Walls: Prioritize reinforcing the walls directly surrounding your Dungeon Heart. Use the "Reinforce Wall" spell (cost: 100 Gold per tile). This makes them much harder for heroes to dig through, forcing them to use established pathways where your traps and creatures await.

Mid-Game Fortifications: Layered Security

As your dungeon expands and you accumulate more Gold and Mana, you can implement more sophisticated defenses.

Trap Placement

Traps are your silent guardians, weakening heroes before they even reach your main forces. Place them strategically in choke points leading to your Heart.

  • Boulder Traps: Excellent for dealing massive damage to groups of heroes. Place them at the end of long corridors or at turns where heroes will bunch up. Ensure there's enough space for the boulder to roll effectively.
  • Spike Traps: Good for continuous damage over time. Place them in high-traffic areas or just before a Boulder Trap to soften up enemies.
  • Alarm Traps: While not damaging, these are invaluable for early warning. Place them further out in your dungeon to alert you to hero incursions, giving you time to prepare your defenses or rally your creatures.

Defensive Rooms

Integrate defensive rooms into your Heart's perimeter for maximum effect.

  • Guard Post (Expanded): Expand your initial Guard Post into a larger area capable of holding more creatures. Place it strategically so creatures can quickly engage any threats to the Heart. Consider placing a Training Room nearby to allow creatures to level up quickly for better defense.
  • Barracks: While not directly defensive, a well-placed Barracks allows you to quickly recruit and train new creatures to replace fallen defenders or bolster your ranks during an assault.

Creature Deployment

Assign specific creatures to defend your Heart. Don't rely solely on wandering creatures.

  • Horned Reapers: Once available, these are your premier defenders. Their high attack and health make them formidable. Assign at least one or two to guard the immediate vicinity of your Heart.
  • Bile Demons: Their high health and area-of-effect attacks make them excellent tanking units against multiple heroes.
  • Warlocks/Dark Mistresses: Ranged attackers are crucial for picking off heroes from a distance while your melee units engage. Position them behind your melee defenders.
  • Vampires: Their ability to resurrect makes them incredibly resilient defenders, especially in prolonged engagements.

Late-Game & Emergency Measures

When the stakes are highest, you need to pull out all the stops.

  • Fortress Walls: If you have access to the "Fortress" spell (requires a Library and research), upgrade the walls directly around your Dungeon Heart to Fortress Walls. These are the strongest walls in the game and can withstand significant hero attacks.
  • Mana Vaults: Build Mana Vaults near your Dungeon Heart. This ensures you have a readily available supply of Mana for emergency spells like "Heal" or "Lightning" when your Heart is under direct assault.
  • "Call to Arms" Spell: This spell (cost: 100 Mana) is your panic button. Cast it near your Dungeon Heart to instantly teleport all available creatures to that location. Use it when a major hero invasion breaches your outer defenses.
  • "Lightning" Spell: A powerful offensive spell (cost: 200 Mana) that can quickly dispatch high-threat heroes. Keep your Mana reserves high for this.
  • "Heal" Spell: Crucial for keeping your defenders alive during a protracted battle. Target your most valuable creatures or your Dungeon Heart directly if it's taking damage.

Remember, a proactive defense is always better than a reactive one. Scout regularly, anticipate hero movements, and keep your Dungeon Heart well-protected at all times!
