Hero Portal Door
The Hero Portal Door is a unique and often critical structure that serves as the entry point for the "goodly" Heroes attempting to invade your dungeon. Understanding its mechanics and how to counter the Heroes it spawns is paramount to your success as a Dungeon Keeper.
Understanding Hero Spawns
Unlike regular enemy creatures that might tunnel in or appear from other dungeon entrances, Heroes exclusively emerge from Hero Portal Doors. These doors are typically found in specific locations on the map, often at the edges or in areas that require significant tunneling to reach. Once a Hero Portal Door is activated (which usually happens after a certain amount of time has passed or a specific objective is met), it will periodically spawn Heroes.
- Spawn Rate: The rate at which Heroes spawn varies significantly between levels. Some levels might have a slow trickle of weak Heroes, while others unleash a relentless wave of powerful adversaries.
- Hero Types: The types of Heroes that emerge are also level-dependent. Early levels might see only Monks and Fairies, while later stages introduce more formidable foes like Knights, Wizards, and even Avatars.
- Triggering Spawns: Be aware that some Hero Portal Doors are dormant until a specific condition is met, such as you claiming a certain land tile, destroying an enemy Keeper's Heart, or a timer expiring. Always check the level objectives and map layout for potential triggers.
Strategic Approaches to Hero Portal Doors
Dealing with Hero Portal Doors requires a multi-faceted strategy, combining defense, offense, and sometimes even manipulation.
1. Early Detection and Containment
The first step is always to identify the location of any Hero Portal Doors on the map. Use your Scrying Room or simply explore with Imps to uncover these critical points.
- Wall Off: If possible, and if the door is not yet active, consider walling off the area around the Hero Portal Door with Reinforced Walls. This can buy you valuable time to prepare your defenses. Be cautious, as some Heroes can eventually break through even reinforced walls.
- Guard Posts: Establish Guard Posts near potential Hero entry points. Even if the door isn't active, having a few Skeletons or Bile Demons on standby can provide an early warning system and a first line of defense.
2. Defensive Fortifications
Once Heroes start pouring out, robust defenses are essential. The goal is to funnel Heroes into kill zones where your creatures and traps can decimate them.
- Trap Corridors: Create long, winding corridors leading from the Hero Portal Door towards your dungeon heart. Line these corridors with several traps:
- Boulder Traps: Excellent for dealing massive damage to groups of Heroes. Place them strategically at turns or choke points.
- Spike Traps: Provide consistent damage over time and can wear down even tough Heroes.
- Poison Gas Traps: Weaken Heroes and make them more susceptible to your creatures' attacks.
- Alarm Traps: Crucial for early warning, allowing you to re-position creatures or cast spells.
- Choke Points and Battle Arenas: Designate specific areas where your creatures will engage the Heroes. These should be easily defensible and allow your creatures to focus fire. Consider placing a Temple nearby to convert captured Heroes or a Torture Chamber to gain valuable intelligence.
- Reinforced Walls & Doors: Use Stone Doors or Steel Doors to create barriers that slow down Heroes, allowing your traps to reset or your creatures to heal. Always back these with reinforced walls.
3. Offensive Strategies
Sometimes, a good offense is the best defense. Directly engaging Heroes at their portal can prevent them from ever reaching your dungeon proper.
- Massed Assault: Once you have a strong army of high-level creatures (e.g., Horned Reapers, Dragons, Warlocks), you can launch a direct assault on the Hero Portal Door. Use the Call to Arms spell to gather your forces.
- Destroying the Door: While not always possible, some Hero Portal Doors can be destroyed. This is a high-risk, high-reward strategy. If successful, it permanently stops Hero spawns from that specific door. Focus your most powerful creatures on attacking the door directly.
- Possession: Possessing a powerful creature like a Dragon or a Horned Reaper and leading the charge can be incredibly effective, allowing you to directly control the battle and focus attacks on priority targets like Wizards or Healers.
4. Spell Usage
Your spell arsenal is invaluable when dealing with Hero Portal Doors.
- Lightning: Excellent for picking off individual high-threat Heroes or softening up groups.
- Boulder: Similar to Boulder Traps, casting Boulder directly on a group of Heroes can be devastating.
- Heal: Keep your creatures alive during prolonged engagements.
- Speed: Boost your creatures' attack and movement speed, allowing them to overwhelm Heroes.
- Call to Arms: Essential for quickly gathering your forces to repel an invasion.
- Turncoat: If you have a Torture Chamber, you can capture Heroes and then use Turncoat to convert them to your side, turning their own forces against them.
Specific Hero Threats and Counters
Be aware of the specific abilities of different Hero types and tailor your strategy accordingly.
- Monks & Fairies: Generally weak, but Fairies can heal. Prioritize Fairies.
- Archers: Ranged attackers. Use creatures with high armor or ranged attacks of your own (e.g., Warlocks) to counter them.
- Knights: High health and armor. Require sustained damage from multiple creatures or powerful spells.
- Wizards: Dangerous spellcasters. Focus them down quickly with fast-attacking creatures or direct damage spells like Lightning.
- Avatars: The ultimate Hero threat. These require your absolute strongest creatures and a well-executed plan. Use Boulder traps, Lightning, and focus all available firepower. Consider luring them into a heavily trapped area.
By understanding the mechanics of the Hero Portal Door and implementing these strategies, you can effectively manage the Hero threat and ensure the continued expansion of your evil empire.
