Enemy Aggro Management — Dungeonborne Guide

Enemy aggro management is a critical skill in Dungeonborne, especially in group content, determining which player an enemy focuses its attacks on. Effectively managing aggro ensures that tanks can absorb damage, healers can focus on keeping allies alive, and damage dealers can safely unleash their full potential. This guide covers the principles of aggro and how to manipulate it.

Aggro, short for aggression, is a hidden value that each enemy asss to players based on their actions. Actions that generate aggro include dealing damage, using certain abilities (especially taunts), healing allies, and sometimes even just being in close proximity. You with the highest aggro value towards an enemy is typically the one that enemy will target.

For tanking classes like the Fighter or Death Knight, generating and maintaining high aggro is their primary role. This is achieved through consistent damage output, the use of specific 'taunt' abilities that instantly generate a large amount of aggro, and abilities that deal area-of-effect damage to engage multiple enemies at once. A good tank will actively use their abilities to keep enemies focused on them, preventing them from attacking squishier party members.

Damage dealers, such as Pyromancers, Swordmasters, or Archers, need to be mindful of their aggro generation. While their goal is to deal damage, over-aggroing can pull enemies off the tank, leading to dangerous situations. They should generally allow the tank to establish initial aggro before engaging at full force. Some damage-dealing abilities might generate more aggro than others, and learn which of their skills are 'aggro-heavy' and use them judiciously, especially when the tank is still building threat.

Healers, like Priests, also generate aggro, primarily through their healing spells. While healing is essential, excessive or poorly timed healing can cause enemies to switch targets to the healer. This is why positioning is crucial for healers; they should ideally be positioned behind the tank and out of direct line of sight of most enemies, and use their healing spells efficiently rather than spamming them unnecessarily.

Understanding 'threat drops' or 'aggro resets' can also be useful. Some enemies might have mechanics that cause them to lose aggro on their current target and seek out a new one, often You with the second-highest aggro or a player who has recently dealt damage. Being aware of these mechanics can help players anticipate enemy behavior and prevent unexpected target switches.

In essence, aggro management is a cooperative effort. Tanks must be proactive in establishing and holding threat, damage dealers must be mindful of their output relative to the tank, and healers must be efficient and well-positioned. Mastering aggro management ensures smooth dungeon runs, prevents unnecessary wipes, and allows the entire party to perform at their best.
