Master kiting in Dungeonborne. Learn to use distance, terrain, and enemy AI to defeat melee monsters safely with ranged attacks.

Kiting Monsters

Kiting is a fundamental combat tactic in Dungeonborne that allows players to defeat enemies, especially those with dangerous melee attacks, from a safe distance. By skillfully managing your movement and the enemy's AI, you can turn overwhelming odds into manageable encounters.

The core principle of kiting is to maintain a distance from your target that prevents them from reaching you with their melee attacks, while still being within range to land your own attacks, typically ranged ones. This requires a good understanding of enemy movement speed and attack range.

Here's how to effectively kite monsters:

  • Identify Your Target: Kiting is most effective against melee-focused enemies. Ranged enemies or those with large AoE attacks can be more difficult to kite effectively.
  • Maintain Distance: As soon as you engage, or if an enemy closes in, begin moving backward or sideways. Your goal is to stay just outside of their melee reach.
  • Attack When Safe: When you have created enough distance, turn and land a few attacks. Then, immediately resume moving backward before they can retaliate.
  • Use Terrain: Pillars, doorways, and other environmental features can be used to break line of sight or funnel enemies, making kiting easier.
  • Stamina Management: Sprinting consumes stamina. While kiting, you'll need to balance moving backward with having enough stamina to dodge if the enemy unexpectedly closes the gap or uses a ranged attack.
  • Enemy AI: Most enemies will pursue you relentlessly. However, some might have a 'patrol' or 'aggro' range. Understanding these boundaries can help you control when and how you engage.

Kiting is particularly useful for:

  • Soloing Tough Enemies: Allows you to defeat powerful melee monsters that would otherwise overwhelm you.
  • Pulling Enemies: Safely drawing a single enemy away from a larger group.
  • Conserving Resources: Minimizing damage taken means using fewer healing items.

Classes with strong ranged capabilities, such as Mages and Archers, excel at kiting. However, even melee classes can employ kiting tactics by using their movement abilities or strategically retreating to create openings for their own attacks. Practice is key; learn the movement speeds of different enemies and the range of their attacks. Mastering kiting will significantly increase your survivability and efficiency in Dungeonborne.
