The First Great Rune — Elden Ring Walkthrough

The Shattering has left the Lands Between in disarray, and the key to restoring order lies in the fragmented power of the Great Runes. Your first major objective after escaping Limgrave is to acquire and activate one of these potent relics, beginning your journey to mend the Elden Ring and claim your destiny as Elden Lord.

The first Great Rune you'll likely encounter and have the opportunity to acquire is Godrick's Great Rune. This powerful artifact is obtained by defeating Godrick the Grafted, a formidable demigod who has claimed dominion over Stormveil Castle. His defeat marks a significant milestone in your early progression, granting you a tangible boost to your character's capabilities and opening up new avenues of exploration.

Acquiring Godrick's Great Rune:

  1. Reach Stormveil Castle: After acquiring the Spectral Steed Whistle and exploring Limgrave, you must make your way to Stormveil Castle, a massive, heavily guarded fortress.
  2. Navigate Stormveil Castle: The castle is a labyrinth of traps, ambushes, and challenging enemies. You'll need to find a way to bypass or defeat the Grafted Scion at the entrance, or find an alternative path through the castle's ramparts.
  3. Defeat Godrick the Grafted: At the heart of Stormveil Castle, you will confront Godrick the Grafted. This boss fight has two distinct phases, the first featuring his grafted arm and axe, and the second where he wields a dragon's head as a weapon.
  4. Obtain the Remembrance of the Grafted: Upon defeating Godrick, you will receive the Remembrance of the Grafted.
  5. Exchange the Remembrance: Take the Remembrance of the Grafted to Enia at the Roundtable Hold. She will allow you to exchange it for Godrick's Great Rune or the Grafted Dragon's Greataxe. Choose Godrick's Great Rune.

Activating and Using Godrick's Great Rune:

Simply possessing Godrick's Great Rune is not enough; it must be activated to provide its benefits. This requires finding a Divine Tower associated with the demigod who dropped it.

  1. Locate the Divine Tower of Limgrave: This tower is situated on an island east of Stormveil Castle, accessible by traversing the cliffs and bridges.
  2. Ascend the Tower: Navigate the Divine Tower, overcoming its challenges and enemies, until you reach the top.
  3. Activate the Great Rune: At the altar within the Divine Tower, you can activate Godrick's Great Rune.

Once activated, Godrick's Great Rune provides a significant boost to all of your character's attributes (+5 to Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane). However, to benefit from this buff, you must consume a Rune Arc. Rune Arcs are rare consumables dropped by enemies or found in the world. Equip the Great Rune at a Site of Grace and consume a Rune Arc to empower yourself.

Acquiring and activating your first Great Rune is a monumental step in your journey. It sifies your growing power and your commitment to challenging the established order of the Lands Between.
