The Altus Plateau Ascent — Elden Ring Walkthrough
The Altus Plateau represents a significant leap in difficulty and scope, marking the transition into the mid-game of Elden Ring. This vast, golden region is home to powerful enemies, intricate dungeons, and crucial story progression points. Reaching it requires overcoming specific challenges, and navigating its treacherous terrain demands careful planning and execution.
There are two primary methods to reach the Altus Plateau. The first, and most direct, is via the Grand Lift of Dectus. To activate this colossal elevator, you must acquire both halves of the Dectus Medallion. The left half is found in the Fort Haight in East Limgrave, guarded by a tough knight. The right half is located in the Dragonbarrow region of Caelid, specifically within the ruins of Fort Faroth, often guarded by spectral bats and a powerful dragon.
Once both medallion halves are in your possession, travel to the northernmost part of the Liurnia of the Lakes. At the end of a long bridge, you'll find the Grand Lift of Dectus. Interact with the mechanism to present the medallion, initiating a cutscene and transporting you to the Altus Plateau. Be prepared for immediate threats upon arrival, as the area is patrolled by formidable foes.
The second method involves a more perilous journey through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. This lengthy dungeon is located in the northern reaches of the Liurnia of the Lakes. It's a challenging ascent filled with ambushes, tricky platforming, and powerful enemies. Successfully navigating the Ruin-Strewn Precipice will lead you directly to the Altus Plateau, bypassing the need for the Dectus Medallion. This route is often considered more difficult but offers valuable loot along the way.
Upon arriving at the Altus Plateau, you'll find a sprawling landscape dotted with golden trees, ancient ruins, and new, dangerous creatures. The Leyndell Knights and various corrupted creatures pose significant threats. Your immediate goals should include:
- Finding the Altus Plateau Map Fragment: Located near the Minor Erdtree in the northern part of the plateau.
- Activating the Great Carriage: A powerful enemy encounter that, upon defeat, drops a valuable item and opens a path.
- Exploring the various Dungeons: The plateau is home to several optional dungeons like the Lux Ruins and the Perfumer's Ruins, which contain valuable items and Spirit Ashes.
- Reaching the Capital Outskirts: This area leads towards Leyndell, Royal Capital, the next major story objective.
The Altus Plateau is also where you'll encounter more advanced crafting materials and potent Ashes of War. Keep an eye out for Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears to further enhance your Flasks. The presence of new, more powerful Spirit Ashes, such as the Lhutel the Headless, can be a game-changer for many builds. Prioritize upgrading your weapons and finding new gear that suits your playstyle. The sheer scale of the Altus Plateau means that thorough exploration is rewarded, but also carries increased risk. Be mindful of your surroundings, as ambushes are common.
