Leyndell, Royal Capital
Welcome, Tarnished, to Leyndell, the Royal Capital – a monumental legacy dungeon that stands as a testament to the Golden Order's former glory and its current decay. This multi-layered labyrinth is a critical juncture in your journey to become Elden Lord, brimming with formidable foes, invaluable treasures, and two of the game's most iconic boss encounters. Prepare for a challenging gauntlet that demands careful exploration, strategic combat, and unwavering resolve.
Unlike previous areas, Leyndell's verticality and intricate design mean that shortcuts and hidden paths are not just conveniences, but necessities for efficient navigation. Expect to encounter elite Leyndell Knights, grotesque Omens, swift Perfumers, and even a few Erdtree Avatars guarding key locations. Your ultimate objective here is to ascend to the Erdtree and confront the Shardbearer who guards its path.
Navigating the Royal Capital: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Access to Leyndell typically begins after defeating the Draconic Tree Sentinel guarding the main entrance on the Altus Plateau. Once inside, you'll find the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Site of Grace.
-
Outer Wall to the Capital Outskirts:
- From the Outer Wall Phantom Tree, head east. You'll encounter a large open area with several Leyndell Knights and a Golden Shade of Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Spirit). You can choose to fight him now or bypass him.
- Proceed through the large archway to find the Capital Outskirts Site of Grace.
- Continue along the main path, dealing with more Leyndell Knights and a few Perfumers. You'll eventually reach the Outer Wall Battleground Site of Grace.
-
Entering the City Walls:
- From the Outer Wall Battleground, head south through the gate. You'll find yourself on the main thoroughfare leading into the city proper.
- Be wary of the ballista emplacements and Leyndell Knights patrolling this path.
- Your next major landmark is the East Capital Rampart Site of Grace, located within a building on your left as you enter the main city. This is an excellent base of operations.
-
The Lower City and Avenue Balcony:
- From the East Capital Rampart, descend the stairs and navigate the rooftops and lower streets. This area is dense with Leyndell Knights, Omens, and even a few Giant Ants in the sewers.
- Look for a path that leads down into the main street level. You'll pass through a market area and eventually reach the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace. This is a crucial checkpoint.
- Important Detour (Optional): From the Avenue Balcony, you can drop down to the right onto a lower path leading to the sewers. This path eventually leads to the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, a separate, challenging dungeon filled with Omens and the optional boss Mohg, the Omen. It's not required for Leyndell's main path but offers unique rewards and lore.
-
Ascending to the Upper City:
- From the Avenue Balcony, head west across the main street. You'll see a large archway leading to a courtyard.
- Navigate through this courtyard, dealing with Leyndell Knights and a Crucible Knight.
- Look for a set of stairs leading upwards. Follow these, bypassing or fighting more knights and a few Erdtree Avatars.
- You'll eventually reach a large open area with a massive Erdtree root. This root serves as a natural bridge. Climb it to reach the upper levels.
- Mid-way up the root, you'll find the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace. This is the final checkpoint before the first major boss.

Boss Encounters
Leyndell hosts two mandatory Shardbearer-level bosses, each demanding a unique approach.
Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Golden Shade)
This spectral manifestation of Godfrey is your first major hurdle within the Erdtree Sanctuary. He fights with powerful axe swings and ground stomps, reminiscent of his later, more powerful form.
- Location: Erdtree Sanctuary.
- Weaknesses: Relatively susceptible to Bleed and Frostbite.
- Strategy:
- Phase 1: Godfrey is aggressive but has predictable combos. Dodge into his axe swings to get behind him for counter-attacks. His ground stomp has a wide AoE; jump over it or roll away.
- Phase 2 (at ~50% HP): He gains a new move where he slams his axe into the ground, creating a shockwave that travels forward. Dodge to the side. He also performs a series of stomps that can be chained.
- Recommended: Summoning Spirit Ashes (e.g., Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche) can draw aggro, allowing you to get free hits. Use a weapon with good stagger potential or a fast weapon for quick hits.
- Reward: Talisman Pouch (increases talisman equip slots).
Morgott, the Omen King
The true Shardbearer of Leyndell, Morgott is a relentless and agile foe, wielding several spectral weapons. This fight takes place on the grand bridge leading to the Erdtree.
- Location: Queen's Bedchamber Site of Grace, after defeating Godfrey.
- Weaknesses: Susceptible to Bleed and Frostbite. Can be parried.
- Strategy:
- Phase 1: Morgott uses a spectral sword, dagger, and spear. He is incredibly fast. Learn his combos and dodge timings. His dagger throws are quick but can be dodged. His spear rain attack has a distinct wind-up; run or roll away from the AoE.
- Phase 2 (at ~60% HP): He becomes even more aggressive, gains fire attacks, and his spectral weapons become more potent. He will often leap into the air for a devastating slam.
- Recommended: Melina can be summoned as an NPC ally for this fight, providing a valuable distraction. Spirit Ashes are also highly effective. Use a weapon that can apply status effects quickly. Guard Counters are risky due to his speed but can open him up for criticals if timed perfectly.
- Common Pitfall: Don't get greedy. Morgott punishes over-extension severely. Focus on dodging and landing one or two hits before retreating.
- Reward: Morgott's Great Rune, Remembrance of the Omen King.
Post-Morgott Progression
After defeating Morgott, you will gain access to the Erdtree and the path forward to the Mountaintops of the Giants. However, before leaving Leyndell, consider exploring any missed areas, especially the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds if you haven't already, as it contains unique challenges and rewards.
Leyndell is a masterclass in dungeon design, rewarding thorough exploration and tactical combat. Take your time, learn its secrets, and emerge victorious, Tarnished!
