In the vast, interconnected cosmos of Endless Space, direct military confrontation is not always the most efficient or subtle path to victory. Espionage and covert operations offer a powerful alternative, allowing you to undermine rivals, steal valuable technologies, and sow discord without firing a single shot. Mastering these clandestine arts can turn the tide of any galactic conflict.

The Art of the Spy

Your primary agents in the shadowy world of espionage are your Heroes assigned to the Espionage role. Each Hero has a base Infiltration Skill stat, which can be further boosted by specific Hero abilities, equipment, and even certain system improvements. A higher Infiltration Skill increases the success chance of your operations and reduces the likelihood of your spy being detected.

Recruiting Spies: Look for Heroes with high starting Infiltration Skill or traits that enhance espionage, such as "Shadow Operative" or "Master of Disguise."
Training Spies: Invest in Hero skill tree paths that specifically boost Infiltration, such as the Covert Operations branch, which can unlock abilities like "Ghost Protocol" (reduces detection risk) or "Data Miner" (increases stolen technology yield).
Equipping Spies: Certain Hero equipment, found through quests or market purchases, can significantly enhance your spy's effectiveness. Look for items like the Neural Scrambler (improves infiltration success) or the Cloaking Device Mk. III (reduces detection chance).

Initiating Covert Operations

To begin an espionage mission, navigate to the Diplomacy Screen and select the target empire. From there, click on the Espionage Tab. You will see a list of available operations, each with a specific cost in Influence and a success chance percentage. The higher your spy's Infiltration Skill relative to the target's Counter-Espionage Defense, the greater your chances of success.

Types of Operations:

Steal Technology: This is a cornerstone of early to mid-game espionage. Successfully stealing technology can grant you a random unresearched technology from the target's tech tree, potentially saving you many turns of research. Prioritize empires with advanced research in areas you are lacking.
Sabotage System Production: Disrupts a target system's industrial output, slowing down ship construction or system development. This is particularly effective against systems producing critical fleets or wonders.
Incite Unrest: Increases unhappiness on a target system, potentially leading to revolts or reduced FIDS (Food, Industry, Dust, Science) output. Best used on already struggling systems or those with low approval ratings.
Assassinate Hero: A high-risk, high-reward operation that attempts to eliminate one of the target empire's Heroes. This can cripple their military, economy, or research efforts if a key Hero is removed.
Reveal Fleet Movements: Grants temporary vision of all enemy fleet movements within a certain radius of the targeted system. Excellent for planning ambushes or avoiding powerful enemy fleets.
Plant Misinformation: Reduces the target empire's diplomatic standing with other factions, making them more susceptible to declarations of war or less likely to form alliances.

Counter-Espionage and Defense

While you're busy sowing chaos, other empires will undoubtedly be attempting to do the same to you. Robust counter-espionage is crucial for protecting your assets and maintaining stability.

Assigning Counter-Spies: Assign Heroes to the Administrator role on your most valuable systems. Heroes with high Security Skill are ideal for this, as they boost the system's Counter-Espionage Defense.
System Improvements: Research and construct defensive system improvements like the Planetary Security Network or the Automated Defense Grid. These buildings provide significant bonuses to your system's defense against espionage.
Strategic Hero Placement: If you suspect a specific system is being targeted, move a high-Security Hero there temporarily to deter or catch enemy spies.
Detection and Capture: If an enemy spy is detected, you will have a chance to capture or eliminate them. Successful capture can yield valuable intelligence or even allow you to interrogate them for a temporary boost to your own espionage efforts.

Advanced Strategies

Economic Warfare: Combine Sabotage System Production with Incite Unrest on a key industrial system to cripple an enemy's war machine.
Technological Dominance: Focus your espionage on stealing technologies from multiple advanced empires to rapidly accelerate your own research, especially in the early game.
Pre-War Preparation: Before declaring war, use Reveal Fleet Movements to scout enemy positions and Plant Misinformation to isolate them diplomatically.
Faction-Specific Bonuses: Certain factions, like the United Empire or the Sophons, may have unique Hero traits or faction bonuses that enhance their espionage capabilities. Leverage these strengths to their fullest.

Remember, the shadows are your allies. A well-executed covert operation can be far more devastating than a thousand warships.
