Influence and Political Control
Mastering Influence and Political Control is paramount to galactic domination in Endless Space, allowing you to expand your empire without firing a single shot, or to subtly undermine your rivals. This section will guide you through the intricacies of generating, projecting, and leveraging Influence for strategic advantage.
Generating Influence
Your empire's Influence output is a direct measure of its cultural and political sway. A higher Influence generation rate allows for faster expansion, more effective diplomatic maneuvers, and stronger internal stability.
- System Improvements: Prioritize building Influence-generating structures on your planets.
- Early Game: Focus on the Propaganda Bureau (Tier 1 Empire Development) on newly colonized systems.
- Mid Game: Upgrade to the Ministry of Culture (Tier 2 Empire Development) for a significant boost.
- Late Game: The Galactic Senate (Tier 3 Empire Development) provides a massive empire-wide Influence bonus.
- Hero Assignments: Assign Heroes with high Diplomacy or Politics skills to systems. Their passive bonuses can dramatically increase local Influence generation. Look for skills like Charismatic Leader or Political Strategist.
- Laws and Policies: Enacting certain laws can provide empire-wide Influence bonuses. Access the Empire Laws screen (F3) and consider laws such as:
- Cultural Exchange Act (requires Xeno-Sociology research): Provides a flat percentage bonus to all Influence generation.
- Galactic Census Initiative (requires Advanced Bureaucracy research): Increases Influence per population.
- Technology Tree: Researching specific technologies in the Empire Development and Xeno-Sociology branches will unlock new Influence-generating buildings and passive bonuses.
- Cultural Harmonization (Xeno-Sociology): Unlocks the Cultural Exchange Center, a powerful Influence building.
- Advanced Bureaucracy (Empire Development): Boosts overall Influence output.
- Population Happiness: High system happiness directly translates to increased Influence output. Ensure your systems are well-managed, with sufficient food, industry, and luxury resources.
Projecting Influence and System Conversion
Influence isn't just about generating it; it's about projecting it across the galaxy to absorb neutral systems or even flip enemy systems.
- Identify Target Systems: Open the Galaxy Map (M) and select the Influence Overlay (hotkey 'I'). This will show you the spheres of influence of all empires. Look for neutral systems bordering your territory or enemy systems with low Influence defense.
- Increase Adjacent Influence: The strength of your Influence projection is determined by the total Influence generated by your systems adjacent to the target.
- Build Propaganda Bureaus and Ministries of Culture in your border systems.
- Assign Diplomacy/Politics Heroes to these border systems.
- Enact the Border Expansion Act (requires Galactic Geopolitics research) for a temporary boost to border Influence projection.
- Utilize Hero Actions: Deploy a Hero with high Politics skill on a fleet to the target system's constellation. Select the fleet and choose the Influence Mission action. This provides a direct, temporary boost to your Influence pressure on that system.
- Diplomatic Pressure: Engage in diplomatic exchanges with the controlling empire of a target system. While not a direct conversion tool, maintaining a positive relationship can sometimes soften their resistance to your cultural assimilation.
- Watch the Conversion Timer: Once your Influence pressure on a neutral system is sufficiently high, a Conversion Timer will appear above the system on the Galaxy Map. When this timer reaches zero, the system will automatically join your empire. For enemy systems, the timer represents the point at which their population's loyalty to their current empire begins to waver significantly, leading to unrest and potential rebellion.
Leveraging Influence for Political Control
Beyond system acquisition, Influence is a vital resource for internal politics and diplomatic relations.
- Enacting Laws: Each law in the Empire Laws screen (F3) costs a certain amount of Influence to enact and maintain. Strategic use of laws can provide powerful empire-wide bonuses to various aspects like production, science, or military.
- Diplomatic Actions: Many diplomatic options, such as proposing alliances, demanding tribute, or even declaring war, require Influence. Strong Influence allows for more aggressive and frequent diplomatic plays.
- Access the Diplomacy Screen (F4) to view available actions and their Influence costs.
- The Diplomatic Pressure stat, visible when interacting with another empire, is directly tied to your Influence generation and can reduce the cost of certain diplomatic actions.
- Marketplace Manipulation: While not a direct Influence expenditure, a high Influence rating can subtly affect market prices for luxury resources and strategic resources, making trades more favorable to your empire.
- Hero Recruitment and Upkeep: Recruiting new Heroes and maintaining their services incurs an Influence cost. Prioritize Heroes whose skills align with your current strategic goals.
