Trade Routes and Agreements

Mastering trade in Endless Space is crucial for a thriving empire, providing a steady influx of Dust and bolstering your diplomatic standing. This section will guide you through the intricacies of establishing and optimizing your trade networks.

Understanding Trade Routes

Trade routes are established between your systems and those of other empires (or even between your own systems, though less common for profit). They generate Dust based on several factors:

  • Distance: Longer routes generally yield more Dust, but also expose your Freighters to more potential threats.
  • System Development: Highly developed systems with numerous improvements and high population contribute significantly more to trade income.
  • Trade Route Improvements: Specific system improvements, such as the Trade Subsidiaries or Galactic Markets, directly boost trade revenue.
  • Diplomatic Status: Trade routes with allies or neutral empires are more stable and profitable. Hostile empires will not engage in trade.

Establishing Trade Agreements

Before you can establish a trade route with another empire, you must first secure a Trade Agreement. This is a diplomatic action that signifies a mutual willingness to exchange goods and services.

  1. Initiate Diplomacy: Navigate to the Diplomacy screen (accessible via the top-right UI panel or by clicking on an empire's icon on the galaxy map).
  2. Select "Propose Agreement": Within the diplomacy options for your chosen empire, select "Propose Agreement."
  3. Choose "Trade Agreement": From the list of available agreements, select "Trade Agreement."
  4. Negotiate Terms: The AI will respond with their willingness to accept. You may need to offer concessions (e.g., Dust, strategic resources, research agreements) to sweeten the deal, especially with less friendly empires. Conversely, if you have a strong diplomatic standing, they might accept without further demands.
  5. Confirm Agreement: Once both parties agree, the Trade Agreement is established. This unlocks the ability to create trade routes between your systems and theirs.

Pro-Tip: Early game, prioritize Trade Agreements with empires that are geographically close and have well-developed systems. This maximizes early Dust income and minimizes freighter travel time.

Creating and Managing Trade Routes

Once a Trade Agreement is in place, you can begin establishing the actual trade routes.

  1. Access the Trade Screen: Go to the System Management screen for one of your systems. On the left-hand panel, locate and click on the "Trade" tab.
  2. Identify Potential Routes: The Trade screen will display a list of potential trade routes, showing the projected Dust income, the destination system, and the required Freighter capacity.
  3. Build Freighters: Each trade route requires a dedicated Freighter. If you don't have enough Freighters available, you'll need to build them in your shipyards. Freighters are civilian ships and do not require military modules.
  4. Assign Freighters to Routes: Click on a desired trade route in the Trade screen. If you have an available Freighter, it will be automatically assigned, and the route will become active. If not, you'll be prompted to build one.
  5. Monitor Route Security: Active trade routes are represented by lines on the galaxy map. These lines indicate the path your Freighters will take. Keep an eye on systems along these routes for pirate activity or hostile fleets.
  6. Upgrade Trade Infrastructure: Invest in system improvements like the Trade Logistics Center or Interstellar Commerce Guild to increase the number of available trade routes and their overall profitability.

Optimizing Your Trade Network

  • Strategic System Placement: When expanding, consider colonizing systems that can serve as excellent trade hubs, connecting multiple other systems.
  • Defend Your Routes: Pirate fleets can raid your trade routes, destroying Freighters and temporarily disrupting Dust income. Station military fleets in vulnerable systems or patrol key trade lanes to deter pirates. Researching technologies like Automated Defense Systems can also help.
  • Research Trade Technologies: The Science & Exploration tech tree offers several advancements that directly impact trade, such as Advanced Trade Protocols (increases Dust from trade) and Hyperlane Mapping (improves freighter speed).
  • Exploit Faction Bonuses: Some factions, like the Sophons or the United Empire, have inherent bonuses to trade or Dust generation. Leverage these to your advantage.
  • Re-evaluate Routes: As your empire grows and diplomatic relations shift, regularly review your trade routes. Cancel unprofitable or dangerous routes and establish new, more lucrative ones.

By diligently managing your Trade Routes and Agreements, you can transform your empire into an economic powerhouse, fueling your expansion and technological advancements.
