Enter the Carpenter's Vault. You'll face several Shroud-corrupted enemies inside. Use your basic combat skills, focusing on dodges and well-timed attacks. The Carpenter's pod is usually at the deepest part of the vault. Interact with the pod to awaken him. Once awakened, he will teleport back to your Flame Altar, ready to offer his services.
