6.1. Health System Explained — Escape from Tarkov Guide
The health system in Escape from Tarkov is one of the most intricate and punishing aspects of the game. Understanding how to manage your health, treat injuries, and prevent fatal conditions is absolutely critical for survival.
Your character has a set amount of Health Points (HP), typically starting at 220 for most PMCs. This HP is divided among different body parts: Head, Chest, Stomach, Arms (left and right), and Legs (left and right). Each body part has its own HP pool, and damage is applied to these specific locations. For example, a headshot will instantly kill you if it bypasses your helmet, while a leg shot will cripple your mobility.
When you take damage, you can suffer from two main issues: HP loss and Debilitating Effects. HP loss reduces the total health of a body part. Debilitating effects are negative status conditions that impair your character's performance. These include:
- Bleeding (Light/Heavy): Continuous HP loss from a damaged body part. Light bleeding is slower and stops on its own eventually, while heavy bleeding is rapid and requires immediate attention.
- Fracture: Occurs when a limb's HP reaches zero. A fractured limb severely reduces movement speed and can cause tremors.
- Pain: A general debuff that can occur from severe damage, causing screen distortion and reduced stamina regeneration.
- Concussion: Caused by explosions or certain melee hits, resulting in blurred vision and disorientation.
- Dehydration: Your character's hydration level depletes over time. If it reaches zero, you will start losing HP.
- Starvation: Your character's energy level depletes over time. If it reaches zero, you will start losing HP.
To counter these effects, you need several medical items. These are categorized into:
- Painkillers: Temporarily remove the 'Pain' debuff and boost stamina regeneration. Examples: Ibuprofen, Analgin.
- Bandages: Stop light bleeding. Examples: Bandage, Gauze.
- Hemostats: Stop heavy bleeding. Examples: Hemo, Combat Bandage.
- Splints: Treat fractures. Examples: Aluminum Splint, Tourniquet.
- Medical Kits: Provide a combination of healing effects and can restore HP to multiple body parts. Examples: Salewa Medical Kit, IFAK, AFAK, Grizzly Medical Kit.
Key Strategies:
- Always carry a mix of medical supplies: at least one hemostat for heavy bleeds, a splint for fractures, and a good medical kit for general healing.
- Prioritize treating heavy bleeding and fractures immediately, as they can quickly incapacitate you.
- Use painkillers before engaging in intense firefights to mitigate the effects of pain and improve stamina.
- Monitor your hydration and energy levels, especially on larger maps like Woods or Interchange.
The health system is unforgiving. A single poorly treated injury can snowball into a fatal situation. Mastering its nuances is a cornerstone of long-term survival in Tarkov.
