Security Status & CONCORD
Understanding Security Status and the role of CONCORD is absolutely critical for any pilot navigating the vast and often dangerous universe of EVE Online. Your Security Status dictates where you can safely operate, and CONCORD acts as the primary enforcer of order in High-Security (High-Sec) space. Ignoring these mechanics can lead to swift and costly consequences.
What is Security Status?
Your Security Status is a numerical value ranging from -10.0 to +10.0. It reflects your standing with the various empires and, by extension, CONCORD. Every pilot starts with a Security Status of 0.0. Engaging in certain activities will cause this number to fluctuate:
- Killing NPCs (Pirates, Faction Warfare Opponents): Generally increases your Security Status. The more dangerous the NPC, the greater the potential increase.
- Killing Player Characters (PVP): This is where things get tricky.
- Unprovoked Aggression (Ganking): Attacking another player without them having committed an aggressive act against you first will severely decrease your Security Status.
- Killing a Criminal/Outlaw: If you engage a player who already has a criminal timer or a negative Security Status, your own status may not be negatively impacted, or it might even improve slightly if they are a significant threat.
- Completing Agent Missions: Some missions, particularly those for the four main empires (Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar), can offer minor Security Status gains.
CONCORD's Role and Response Times
CONCORD (Consortium of Concordiat Corporations) is the interstellar police force in EVE Online. Their primary function is to maintain order in High-Security space (systems rated 0.5 to 1.0). They are the ultimate deterrent against unprovoked aggression in these systems.
CONCORD Response Mechanics:
- Aggression Detected: If a player initiates an unprovoked attack on another player in High-Sec, CONCORD will immediately be alerted.
- Criminal Timer: The aggressor will receive a "Criminal Timer" (red flashing skull icon next to their name) and a "Weapons Timer." During this time, they cannot jump through stargates or dock in stations.
- CONCORD Arrival: CONCORD ships will warp to the aggressor's location. The time it takes for CONCORD to arrive varies based on the system's security rating:
- 1.0 Security Systems: CONCORD arrives almost instantly (within seconds).
- 0.5 Security Systems: CONCORD takes longer to arrive (up to 20-30 seconds or more). This extended response time is why 0.5 systems are often targeted by "gankers" who aim to destroy a target before CONCORD intervenes.
- CONCORD Intervention: Upon arrival, CONCORD ships will engage and destroy the aggressor's ship with overwhelming force. There is no escaping CONCORD in High-Sec once they have targeted you.
- Security Status Loss: The aggressor will suffer a significant loss to their Security Status, potentially dropping them into negative territory.
Navigating Security Status Penalties
If your Security Status drops below 0.0, you become an "outlaw" in the eyes of CONCORD and the empires. This has several severe implications:
- CONCORD Engagement in High-Sec: If your Security Status is -5.0 or lower, CONCORD will automatically attack and destroy your ship if you enter any 0.5-1.0 security system. This is an immediate, unprovoked attack.
- Faction Police: Even with a Security Status between 0.0 and -5.0, you might be targeted by Faction Police in High-Sec systems belonging to the empire you have negative standing with. These police ships are less powerful than CONCORD but can still be a significant threat to smaller ships.
- Limited Access: You may be unable to dock in stations belonging to empires with whom you have very low standing.
Restoring Your Security Status
If you find yourself with a negative Security Status, there are several ways to improve it:
1. Running Security Missions:
- Locate a Security Agent: Open your NeoCom (Alt+A), navigate to the "Agents" tab, and filter by "Security" agents. Look for agents in High-Sec systems.
- Accept Missions: Take on combat missions. Destroying pirate NPCs will grant you Security Status increases upon mission completion.
- Focus on Higher Level Missions: Level 3 and Level 4 Security Missions offer the most significant Security Status gains.
- Repeat: This is a slow but steady process. You'll need to run many missions to recover a severely negative status.
2. Destroying Pirate NPCs in Asteroid Belts/Anomalies:
- Warp to Asteroid Belts: In High-Sec systems, warp to any asteroid belt. You will often find pirate NPCs (e.g., Sansha's Nation, Serpentis, Guristas) spawning there.
- Engage and Destroy: Destroying these NPCs will grant small, incremental increases to your Security Status.
- Use a Combat Ship: Equip a combat-capable frigate, destroyer, or cruiser (e.g., a Catalyst, Coercer, or Vexor) with appropriate weapons and modules (e.g., Medium Autocannons, Damage Control II, Adaptive Invulnerability Field II).
- Be Patient: Like missions, this is a grind, but it can be done passively while mining or waiting for other activities.
3. Using Security Tags (Most Efficient Method):
- Acquire Security Tags: These are items dropped by pirate NPCs in various regions of space, particularly in Low-Sec and Null-Sec. They can also be purchased on the market. Common tags include Sansha's Nation Tag, Serpentis Tag, Guristas Tag, etc.
- Travel to a CONCORD Station: You need to be in a station owned by CONCORD. The most common and accessible CONCORD station is CONCORD Assembly in the Yvette system (Gallente Federation space). Other CONCORD stations exist in other empire regions.
- Redeem Tags: Dock at the CONCORD station. Open your inventory, right-click on the Security Tags, and select "Redeem Security Status." A window will appear showing how much status you will gain for the tags you possess.
- Cost-Effective: While tags can be expensive, they offer the fastest way to recover large amounts of Security Status. The higher the value of the tag, the more status it grants.
Always be mindful of your Security Status, especially when operating in High-Sec. A momentary lapse in judgment can lead to a costly encounter with CONCORD and a lengthy process to restore your standing in New Eden.
