Humanoid Enemies
The Mojave Wasteland is crawling with hostile humanoids, from desperate raiders and mutated ghouls to organized factions and cunning mercenaries. These enemies often employ tactics, use cover, and wield several weapons, making them some of the most challenging foes you'll encounter. Understanding their motivations and combat styles is key to survival.
Raiders: These are the most common hostile humanoids. They are typically found in makeshift camps, abandoned buildings, and along roads. Raiders are often poorly equipped but can swarm you in large numbers. They primarily use pipe pistols, shotguns, and melee weapons. Some specialized raider groups, like the Vipers and Jackals, have distinct appearances and tactics.
Powder Gangers: A violent and disorganized faction of escaped convicts. They are often found in the early areas of the game, particularly around Primm and the NCR Correctional Facility. They favor crude weapons and often attack in groups. Be wary of their explosive charges and their tendency to rush.
Fiends: A particularly vicious and unpredictable group of drug-addicted raiders operating primarily in the northern parts of the Mojave, especially around Westside and the Strip's outskirts. They are known for their use of chems, which can make them more aggressive and resilient. They wield several weapons and are often found in large, dangerous groups.
Great Khans: While not always hostile, some Great Khan members can be aggressive, especially if you provoke them or interfere with their operations. They are a tribal group with a history of drug production and a strong sense of community. They often use shotguns and melee weapons.
Brotherhood of Steel (Outcasts): While the main Brotherhood of Steel in the Mojave is generally neutral or friendly, certain splinter groups or 'outcasts' might be hostile, particularly if you're not aled with them or if you possess technology they deem dangerous. They are heavily armored and wield powerful energy weapons.
NCR Troopers & Soldiers: While the NCR is a major faction and generally friendly, individual troopers or patrols might become hostile if you are on bad terms with them, or if you are caught committing crimes in their territory. They are well-equipped with standard NCR firearms.
Caesar's Legion: A brutal, militaristic faction from the East. Legionaries are fanatically devoted and often attack in waves, using a combination of melee weapons (like gladius swords) and thrown javelins. They wear distinctive armor and are highly disciplined. Be prepared for their relentless assault.
Mercenaries: Various mercenary groups, such as the Crimson Caravan Company (though their guards are usually neutral unless provoked) or independent contractors, can be encountered. Some may be hired by other factions or individuals, making them hostile to you. Their equipment varies widely.
Specialized Humanoid Enemies:
- Super Mutants: While not strictly 'humanoid' in the traditional sense due to their mutations, they are bipedal and often use firearms. They are incredibly strong and resilient, making them a sificant threat.
- Robots: Various security and utility robots, such as Securitrons and Protectrons, can be hostile depending on their programming and your faction standing.
Combat Strategies:
- Target weak points: Aim for the head for critical damage.
- Use cover: Duck behind objects to avoid incoming fire.
- Exploit weaknesses: Raiders are often susceptible to headshots and explosives. Legionaries can be overwhelmed by sustained fire or well-placed mines.
- VATS: use VATS to target specific limbs and disable opponents.
- Armor: Invest in good armor to mitigate damage.
- Companions: Bring along companions who can draw enemy fire and provide support.
