Post-Game Content & Replayability
While Far Cry 2 doesn't feature a traditional New Game+ mode, the vast, war-torn landscape of the fictional African nation offers plenty of opportunities for continued engagement after the credits roll. The game's open-world design and emergent gameplay shine in the post-campaign phase, allowing you to truly embrace the role of a mercenary without the immediate pressure of the main storyline.
Continuing Your Mercenary Career
Upon completing the main narrative, you'll find yourself back in the world, free to explore and tie up any loose ends. The conflict between the UFLL and APR continues, ensuring that the world remains dynamic and dangerous.
Faction Missions
Even after the main story concludes, you can still undertake side missions for both the UFLL and APR. These missions are often procedurally generated or repeat specific objectives, providing a continuous stream of combat encounters and opportunities to earn Blood Diamonds. Look for the faction representatives at their respective headquarters:
- UFLL Headquarters: Located in the northern district of Leboa-Sako, often marked by a large, fortified compound.
- APR Headquarters: Found in the southern region of Bowa-Seko, typically a more sprawling base of operations.
These missions typically involve:
- Assassinations: Eliminating high-value targets.
- Supply Runs: Delivering crucial items to outposts.
- Sabotage: Destroying enemy installations or vehicles.
Completing these missions is an excellent way to accumulate more Blood Diamonds for weapon purchases and upgrades.
Buddy Missions
While the main narrative involving your buddies might conclude, you can still encounter them in the world, particularly at safe houses. They might offer additional, smaller tasks or simply provide dialogue that fleshes out the ongoing conflict. Keep an eye out for their icons on your map when near a safe house.
Hunting for Collectibles
If you haven't already, the post-game is the perfect time to meticulously scour the map for all hidden items. This not only provides a sense of completion but also offers practical benefits.
Locating Diamond Briefcases
There are 221 Diamond Briefcases scattered across the two regions of Leboa-Sako and Bowa-Seko. Each briefcase contains a varying amount of Blood Diamonds. While some are found in plain sight, many are hidden in obscure locations, requiring careful exploration. Utilize your in-game map, which will show a small blinking light when you are within approximately 50-100 meters of a briefcase. Equipping the "Diamond Hand" perk from the weapon shop upgrades can increase the detection range, making this task significantly easier.
- Strategy: Systematically clear out each map sector. Drive along roads and then venture off-road into dense jungle or rocky areas. Many briefcases are near abandoned vehicles, small shacks, or under bridges.
- Reward: Blood Diamonds, essential for purchasing and upgrading all weapons.
Finding Jackal Tapes
There are 9 Jackal Tapes hidden throughout the game world, offering additional lore and insight into the mysterious antagonist. These are often found in more significant locations, such as mission objectives or larger outposts. While they don't offer direct in-game benefits, they enrich the narrative experience.
- Strategy: Pay close attention to your surroundings in key story locations or larger enemy strongholds. The tapes are typically found on desks, tables, or shelves.
- Reward: Deeper understanding of the game's story and characters.
Weapon Acquisition and Mastery
With an abundance of Blood Diamonds from post-game missions and collectibles, you can finally unlock and fully upgrade every weapon available at the weapon shops. This allows for extensive experimentation with different loadouts and combat styles.
Weapon Shop Locations
Remember to visit the weapon shops found in the main towns:
- Pala: Located in Leboa-Sako, the northern region.
- Port Selao: Found in Bowa-Seko, the southern region.
Recommended Post-Game Loadouts
Experiment with combinations you might not have used during the main campaign:
- Stealth Specialist: Silenced MP5, Dart Rifle, Machete. Perfect for clearing outposts undetected.
- Explosives Expert: MGL-140 Grenade Launcher, IEDs, M79 Grenade Launcher (secondary). Ideal for large enemy groups and vehicle destruction.
- Sniper Master: AS50 Sniper Rifle, SPAS-12 Shotgun (for close encounters), Makarov (sidearm). Dominate from a distance.
Challenging the World
The post-game is also an excellent opportunity to simply engage with the game's systems for the sheer challenge and fun of it.
Outpost Clearing
All enemy outposts and guard posts will respawn over time. This provides an endless supply of combat encounters. Try to clear them using different tactics:
- Stealth Approach: Use silenced weapons and the machete for silent takedowns.
- Full Assault: Go in guns blazing with heavy weapons and explosives.
- Vehicle Combat: Utilize mounted weapons on vehicles or the armed buggy to decimate enemy positions.
Buddy Rescues
Your buddies can still get into trouble, requiring you to rescue them from enemy capture. These emergent events add unpredictability and keep the world feeling alive.
Replaying the Campaign
While there's no official New Game+, the inherent replayability of Far Cry 2 comes from starting a fresh campaign and making different choices. Consider these options for a new playthrough:
- Different Protagonist: Choose a different playable character at the start. While this doesn't drastically alter the story, it changes your initial buddy relationships and some dialogue.
- Harder Difficulty: Tackle the game on Infamous difficulty for a significantly increased challenge. Enemies are more accurate, take more damage, and resources are scarcer.
- Self-Imposed Challenges:
- No Map/GPS: Rely solely on landmarks and the sun for navigation.
- Limited Weapons: Restrict yourself to only certain weapon types (e.g., only pistols and shotguns).
- No Fast Travel: Experience the full journey across the map for every mission.
- Stealth Only: Attempt to complete as many missions as possible without being detected.
By embracing these post-game activities and considering a new playthrough with different parameters, Far Cry 2 offers a substantial amount of replay value beyond its initial campaign, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in its brutal, beautiful world.
