Combat Basics
Welcome, cyber-commando, to the neon-drenched battlefields of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon! While the game revels in its over-the-top action, mastering the fundamentals of combat will ensure your survival against Omega Force soldiers, cyber-panthers, and the dreaded Blood Dragons. This section will equip you with the knowledge to dominate every encounter.
Stealth vs. Full Assault
Before engaging, always assess the situation. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon offers a robust stealth system that can often turn the tide in your favor, especially against heavily fortified garrisons. However, sometimes, a direct, explosive approach is simply more satisfying.
- Stealth Approach:
- Reconnaissance: Use your Cyber-Eye (activated by pressing the appropriate button, typically L3 on consoles) to tag enemies, identify alarm panels, and locate environmental hazards. This is crucial for planning your attack.
- Silent Takedowns: Approach enemies from behind for a swift, silent melee takedown. This is your primary stealth tool.
- Throwing Stars: The default throwing stars are excellent for silent, medium-range kills on standard infantry. Aim for the head for instant neutralization.
- Bows: The "Kobrakon" bow, once acquired, is a powerful stealth weapon. Its arrows are silent and can be retrieved from fallen enemies. Upgrade it for improved accuracy and damage.
- Distractions: Throw rocks (or later, cyber-hearts) to lure enemies away from their patrol routes or towards environmental traps.
- Alarm Panels: Prioritize disabling alarm panels. If an alarm is raised, reinforcements will pour in, making stealth impossible and combat significantly harder. They are usually marked with a red icon in your Cyber-Eye.
- Full Assault Approach:
- Cover is Key: Even in a full-blown firefight, utilizing cover is paramount. Pop out, fire, and retreat to reload or recover.
- Weapon Variety: Don't stick to one weapon. Switch between your assault rifle (like the "Fazertron"), shotgun ("Galleria 1991"), and explosives ("Molotox" cocktails or grenades) depending on the enemy and range.
- Headshots: Always aim for the head. Headshots deal significantly more damage and are often instant kills, even against tougher enemies.
- Environmental Hazards: Look for explosive barrels, gas tanks, or even cages containing Blood Dragons. Shooting these can create devastating chain reactions or unleash chaos on your enemies.
- Healing: Remember to heal yourself with syringes (hold the appropriate button, typically D-Pad Up on consoles). Don't wait until your health is critical.
Weaponry and Upgrades
Your arsenal is your best friend. As you progress, you'll unlock new weapons and upgrades that drastically improve your combat effectiveness. Always prioritize purchasing weapon upgrades at captured garrisons or weapon caches.
- Pistols: The "A.J.M. 9" is your starting sidearm. It's reliable for headshots and close-quarters combat. Upgrades improve its magazine size and damage.
- Assault Rifles: The "Fazertron" is your workhorse. It's versatile for most engagements. Later, the "Kobracon" sniper rifle is invaluable for long-range takedowns.
- Shotguns: The "Galleria 1991" is devastating at close range. Perfect for clearing rooms or dealing with charging enemies.
- Explosives: "Molotox" cocktails are great for area denial and damaging groups. Grenades are more direct and powerful.
- Special Weapons: Keep an eye out for unique weapons like the "Killstar" minigun or the "Flamethrower." These are situational but incredibly powerful.
- Upgrades: Focus on upgrades that increase damage, magazine capacity, and accuracy for your preferred weapons. Silencers are crucial for stealth weapons.
Dealing with Specific Threats
- Standard Omega Force Soldiers: Easy to dispatch with headshots or stealth takedowns.
- Heavies: These armored brutes require sustained fire, preferably to the head. Explosives are also highly effective. Consider flanking them or using environmental hazards.
- Snipers: Prioritize snipers as they can deal significant damage from a distance. Use your own sniper rifle or a well-placed throwing star.
- Cyber-Panthers: Fast and aggressive. Shotguns or sustained assault rifle fire are best. Try to create distance.
- Blood Dragons: These are the ultimate threat.
- Cyber-Hearts: The most effective way to deal with Blood Dragons is to throw a Cyber-Heart (obtained from fallen Omega Force soldiers) to lure them. They will attack anything near the heart, including other enemies.
- Weak Spots: Their glowing chest is their primary weak spot. Aim for it with powerful weapons.
- Environmental Traps: If a Blood Dragon is near a body of water, shooting the water can electrocute them.
- Dragon Attack: If a Blood Dragon charges you, sprint and dodge. Use heavy weapons or explosives to deter them.
By internalizing these combat basics, you'll be well on your way to becoming the ultimate cyber-commando and saving the world from the nefarious Colonel Sloan!
