Map & Exploration
Welcome, cyber-commando, to the neon-soaked, retro-futuristic island of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon! While the game might seem linear at first glance, mastering the map and efficient exploration is key to uncovering all its secrets, upgrading Rex "Power" Colt, and ultimately saving the world (or at least, looking cool while doing it). This section will guide you through navigating the island, identifying key points of interest, and maximizing your scavenging efforts.
Understanding Your Map
Your map is your most valuable tool for navigating the island. Access it at any time by pressing the designated map button (typically the 'Back' button on Xbox 360 or the 'Select' button on PS3). Here's what you'll find:
- Objective Markers: Your current main mission objective will always be clearly marked with a distinct icon. Side missions and other activities will also appear once discovered.
- Garrison Locations: These enemy strongholds are crucial for unlocking fast travel points and revealing more of the map. They are marked with a red skull icon until liberated, then they turn blue.
- Collectibles: As you explore, various collectible icons will appear on your map. These include:
- TVs: Marked with a small television icon. Destroying these will earn you cyber-points and contribute to challenges.
- VHS Tapes: Represented by a VHS tape icon. Collecting these unlocks new weapons and upgrades.
- Doctor's Bags: A red cross icon indicates these health-restoring pickups.
- Hunting Zones: Areas where specific cyber-creatures (like Blood Dragons or Cyber-Panthers) are more prevalent will be subtly indicated.
- Fast Travel Points: Liberated Garrisons act as fast travel points, allowing you to quickly move across the island.
Liberating Garrisons: Your First Priority
Liberating Garrisons is paramount for efficient exploration and progression. Not only do they unlock fast travel, but they also clear out enemy presence in the immediate area, making scavenging much safer. Here's a step-by-step strategy:
- Reconnaissance: Before storming in, use your binoculars (hold down the right stick on controllers) to tag enemies and identify alarms. Prioritize taking out alarm systems first to prevent reinforcements.
- Stealth or Mayhem?: You have two primary approaches.
- Stealth: Use your bow or silenced weapons to pick off enemies quietly. Aim for headshots for instant takedowns. Utilize environmental hazards like exploding barrels.
- Mayhem: Go in guns blazing! Equip your most powerful weapons like the Fazertron or the K-000. Be prepared for a sustained firefight.
- Blood Dragon Bait: A highly effective (and incredibly fun) strategy is to lure a Blood Dragon into the Garrison. Shoot a Blood Dragon with an arrow to enrage it, then run towards the Garrison. The dragon will often rampage through the enemy forces, doing your dirty work for you. Just be careful not to get caught in the crossfire!
- Secure the Garrison: Once all enemy forces are eliminated, approach the central console to liberate the Garrison. This will turn it into a friendly outpost and a fast travel point.
Scavenging & Collectibles
The island is littered with valuable items that will aid your mission. Keep an eye out for these:
- Cyber-Points: Earned from killing enemies, completing missions, and destroying TVs. These are your primary currency for weapon upgrades and unlocking skills.
- VHS Tapes: There are 32 VHS Tapes scattered across the island. Each tape you collect unlocks a new weapon or upgrade. For example, collecting your first few tapes will unlock the powerful A.J.M. 9 pistol and the devastating Kobrak-47 assault rifle. Consult your map for general locations, but be prepared to explore off the beaten path.
- TVs: There are 120 TVs to destroy. Each one grants you a small amount of cyber-points. They are often found on rooftops, inside buildings, or mounted on poles. Listen for their static-y hum to pinpoint their location.
- Doctor's Bags: These are crucial for restoring your health. Always pick them up when you see them, especially before engaging in a major firefight. They are often found near Garrisons or within enemy patrols.
- Ammo Crates: Look for glowing green crates to replenish your ammunition for all your equipped weapons.
Navigating the Terrain
The island of Blood Dragon features diverse terrain, from dense jungles to ruined urban areas. Here are some tips for efficient navigation:
- Vehicles: Utilize the various vehicles scattered around the island. The Quad Bike is excellent for quick traversal, while the Buggy offers more protection. For water travel, look for the Jet Ski.
- Grappling Hook: While not explicitly a "grappling hook" in the traditional sense, Rex's powerful jump and ability to climb certain ledges allow for vertical exploration. Look for glowing yellow ledges to climb.
- Underwater Exploration: Some collectibles and hidden paths may be found underwater. Rex can hold his breath for a decent amount of time, but keep an eye on your oxygen meter.
- Beware of Blood Dragons: These formidable creatures roam the island. While they can be used to your advantage in Garrisons, they are a significant threat in open areas. Avoid their glowing eyes and their powerful laser breath. If you must engage, aim for their glowing hearts.
By diligently exploring, liberating Garrisons, and scavenging for every last collectible, you'll not only become a master of the island but also a fully-powered cyber-commando ready to take on anything the Omega Force throws at you!
