Summon Locations and Acquisition

Summons are powerful magical allies that only Rydia can call upon in battle. Acquiring them often involves defeating them in combat or finding them in specific locations. This comprehensive guide details how to obtain each summon across all versions of Final Fantasy IV (SNES, GBA, iOS, PlayStation).

Important Note: Unlike some other Final Fantasy titles, only Rydia is capable of using Summons. Palom and Porom, while powerful Black and White Mages respectively, do not have the ability to call upon these creatures.

Chocobo

  • Location: Mysidia
  • Acquisition: This is Rydia's default summon and is available from the moment she rejoins your party as an adult. No special action is required to obtain it.
  • Strategy: Chocobo is a non-elemental attack that deals moderate damage to a single enemy. It's useful early on for general damage output and doesn't consume much MP.

Mist Dragon

  • Location: Mist Cave
  • Acquisition: The Mist Dragon is the very first boss you encounter in the game. Defeating it is mandatory to progress the story.
  • Strategy: Focus your attacks on the Mist Dragon when it is in its physical form. When it transforms into Mist, refrain from attacking, as any damage dealt will heal it. Wait for it to revert to its physical form before resuming your assault. Cecil's Dark Wave and Kain's Jump are effective.

Titan

  • Location: Underground Waterway (after Damcyan)
  • Acquisition: After the events at Damcyan and the subsequent earthquake, you'll find yourself in the Underground Waterway. Titan is a boss fight within this dungeon, encountered relatively early on.
  • Strategy: Titan is an Earth-elemental summon. He is vulnerable to Wind-elemental attacks. Focus on strong physical attacks and any available Wind magic (though you likely won't have much at this point). Cecil's Dark Wave and Kain's Jump are good options. Keep your party healed, as his physical attacks can be strong.

Ramuh

  • Location: Underground Waterway (after Damcyan)
  • Acquisition: Ramuh is found as a boss battle within the Underground Waterway, shortly after the Titan encounter.
  • Strategy: Ramuh is a powerful Thunder-elemental summon. He is vulnerable to Ice-elemental attacks. use any Ice-based magic from your spellcasters (Rydia's Blizzard spell is key here). Focus on keeping your party's HP up, as his Thunder attacks can hit hard.

Shiva

  • Location: Underground Waterway (after Damcyan)
  • Acquisition: Shiva is obtained after defeating her in a boss battle within the Underground Waterway, typically after Ramuh.
  • Strategy: Shiva is an Ice-elemental summon. She is vulnerable to Fire-elemental attacks. Use Rydia's Fire spell repeatedly. Keep your party healed, as her Ice attacks can inflict significant damage.

Ifrit

  • Location: Underground Waterway (after Damcyan)
  • Acquisition: Ifrit is found as a boss battle in the Underground Waterway, usually the last of the elemental summons you encounter there.
  • Strategy: Ifrit is a Fire-elemental summon. He is vulnerable to Ice-elemental attacks. use Rydia's Blizzard spell, or any other Ice-based magic. His Fire attacks can be devastating, so prioritize healing.

Goblin (SNES/GBA/PSP/DS/PC/Mobile Versions)

  • Location: Baron (outside the town)
  • Acquisition: This summon is unique in that it's obtained by a rare drop. You must defeat the "Goblin" enemy type, which can be found in the plains areas around Baron. There is a small chance they will drop the "Goblin" item upon defeat. Use the "Item" command on this item with Rydia to learn the summon. This can be a tedious process due to the low drop rate.
  • Strategy: Goblin is a weak non-elemental attack that hits a single enemy. It's primarily a collector's item and not very useful in combat, but it's a fun early-game challenge for completionists.

Sylph

  • Location: Agart
  • Acquisition: After obtaining the Magma Stone from the Dwarven Castle, you will need to travel to Agart. Speak to the Elder in Agart, and he will grant you the Sylph summon. No battle is required for this summon.
  • Strategy: Sylph is a unique summon that deals non-elemental damage to all enemies while simultaneously healing your party for a portion of the damage dealt. It's particularly useful in longer battles against multiple foes, providing both offense and support.

Odin

  • Location: Baron Castle (Basement)
  • Acquisition: Once you have access to the Baron Castle's basement (after a certain point in the story), you will find Odin. You must defeat him in a boss battle.
  • Strategy: Odin is a powerful physical attacker. He has a chance to instantly defeat all enemies with his "Zantetsuken" attack. However, in the boss fight, he will use powerful physical attacks. He is vulnerable to Lightning. Use Ramuh or Rydia's Thundaga/Thunder spells. Be prepared for a tough fight, as he hits very hard.

Leviathan

  • Location: Cave of Summons
  • Acquisition: Leviathan is a powerful boss found deep within the Cave of Summons, located on the Overworld near the Feymarch. You must defeat him to acquire his summon.
  • Strategy: Leviathan is a Water-elemental summon. In the boss fight, he is vulnerable to Thunder-elemental attacks. use Ramuh, or Rydia's Thundaga/Thunder spells. He uses powerful Tsunami attacks that hit the entire party, so ensure your party is well-equipped with Water-resistant gear (if available) and healed before engaging. Consider using Slow on him and Haste on your party.

Asura

  • Location: Cave of Summons
  • Acquisition: Asura is another powerful boss found within the Cave of Summons, typically encountered after Leviathan. You must defeat her to acquire her summon.
  • Strategy: Asura is unique in that she will counter every attack with either a healing spell (Cure IV) or a powerful physical attack. The key to defeating her is to wait for her to cast Cure IV on herself, then immediately use Reflect on her. This will cause her own healing spells to bounce back and heal your party instead. While Reflect is active, unleash your most powerful physical attacks and non-reflectable magic (like Bahamut or Leviathan if you have them). When Reflect wears off, wait for her to heal again before reapplying it.

Bahamut

  • Location: Bahamut's Lair (Lunar Subterrane)
  • Acquisition: Bahamut is arguably the most powerful summon and is found in a hidden area within the Lunar Subterrane, the final dungeon of the game. You must defeat him in battle.
  • Strategy: Bahamut is an incredibly challenging boss. He will count down from 5 to 1 before unleashing his devastating Mega Flare attack. During this countdown, focus on healing and buffing your party (Haste, Protect, Shell). When he reaches 1, have all characters use the "Defend" command to minimize damage. After Mega Flare, unleash your most powerful attacks (physical attacks, Holy, Flare, Meteor, other summons). Repeat this cycle until he is defeated. Equipping Reflect Rings can also be a viable strategy to bounce his Mega Flare back, but timing is crucial.
