Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII (Dagger)

Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, also known as Dagger, is a central character in Final Fantasy IX. Her survival is crucial in certain battles, as her death can lead to a Game Over. Garnet's abilities and role in combat become evident early on, particularly with the introduction of the Trance system.

After a scene where Zidane follows Garnet, players should ensure Zidane has the Mage Masher equipped if it was acquired. In the next room, speak to Ruby, then proceed down the stairs for another scene. Following this, interact with the engine's wheel, turning it left to reveal a chest with a Phoenix Down and right for a Phoenix Pinion. Collect both items before exiting left, which triggers a significant battle.

During the Prison Cage battle, Trance, Final Fantasy IX's version of a Limit Break, is introduced. Prison Cage frequently uses Absorb on Garnet, making it vital to use a Potion on her with Steiner if she is targeted twice, to prevent a Game Over. The boss's physical attacks against Zidane and Steiner are generally negligible. Stealing from Prison Cage is futile as it has no items. Focus on using Free Energy until Trance ends or the boss is defeated. Avoid using Tidal Flame if Garnet has it, as it will instantly defeat her. Trance does not carry over between battles, so use it strategically when it activates.
