Quick Start Guide
Welcome to the world of Final Fantasy IX! This Quick Start Guide is designed to get you through the initial hours of the game efficiently, highlighting key items, strategies, and important mechanics to ensure a smooth beginning to your adventure. Follow these steps closely to maximize your early game experience.
I. Alexandria Castle: The Kidnapping
Your journey begins aboard the airship, the Prima Vista. After the initial cutscenes, you'll take control of Zidane. Your immediate goal is to infiltrate Alexandria Castle and kidnap Princess Garnet.
- Opening Act: Engage in the play, "I Want to Be Your Canary." During the sword fight sequence, pay attention to the button prompts for Active Time Event (ATE) choices. Successfully completing these can sometimes yield minor rewards or alter dialogue.
- Castle Infiltration: Once inside the castle, navigate through the initial corridors. Your first combat encounters will be against Alexandria Soldiers. These are straightforward; use Zidane's "Attack" command.
- Princess Garnet's Room: After a brief encounter with Steiner, you'll reach Garnet's room. A mini-game involving pulling a rope will ensue. Success here is not critical but can be fun.
- Boss Battle: Masked Man (Baku): This is your first real boss. Baku is not particularly difficult. Focus on attacking him with Zidane. Use Potions if your HP drops significantly.
- Escape from Alexandria: Following the kidnapping, you'll find yourself escaping through the castle. Keep an eye out for hidden items in chests and sparkling spots.
II. Evil Forest: First Dangers
After the crash landing of the Prima Vista, you'll find yourself in the perilous Evil Forest. This area introduces you to the game's core combat mechanics and the importance of abilities.
- Party Setup: You'll have Zidane, Garnet (who cannot act in battle yet), Steiner, and Vivi in your party.
- Combat Strategy:
- Zidane: Continue using "Attack."
- Steiner: His "Attack" is powerful.
- Vivi: This is where Vivi shines. Use his "Fire" spell against the plant-type enemies (Mandragora, Plant Brain) you encounter here. They are weak to fire.
- Item Collection: Be diligent in checking every corner for chests. You'll find Potions and Tents, which are crucial for healing.
- Boss Battle: Plant Brain:
- Weakness: Fire.
- Strategy: Have Vivi repeatedly cast "Fire." Zidane and Steiner should focus on physical attacks. Use Potions to heal any party member whose HP falls below 50%. The Plant Brain can use "Pollute," which inflicts Poison. Have Potions ready.
- Ability Learning: After battles, you'll gain Ability Points (AP). Equip new gear like the Broadsword for Steiner or the Leather Hat for Vivi to learn new abilities. Prioritize learning "Scan" for Vivi and "Flee" for Zidane.
III. Ice Cavern: A Chilling Encounter
The Ice Cavern is your next destination. This area introduces environmental puzzles and a more challenging boss.
- Navigation: The Ice Cavern has slippery floors. Take your time and learn the movement patterns.
- Hidden Items: Look for sparkling spots on the ground and chests. You can find a Mage Masher for Zidane and an Iron Sword for Steiner here. Equip them immediately.
- Boss Battle: Black Waltz No. 1:
- Weakness: Fire.
- Strategy: This boss is a significant step up. Have Vivi cast "Fire" every turn. Zidane should use "Attack" or "Steal" (attempt to steal a Linen Cuirass if you're feeling lucky, but prioritize damage). Steiner should use "Attack." Keep your party's HP above 70% with Potions.
- Important: After defeating Black Waltz No. 1, you'll immediately face Black Waltz No. 2.
- Boss Battle: Black Waltz No. 2:
- Weakness: Fire.
- Strategy: This fight is tougher than the first. Vivi's "Fire" is still your best friend. Black Waltz No. 2 can cast "Blizzard" which hits all party members. Ensure your party is well-healed. If you stole the Linen Cuirass from the previous fight, equip it for its defense. Focus all attacks on the boss.
IV. Dali: A Moment of Respite
After the harrowing experience in the Ice Cavern, you'll arrive in the peaceful village of Dali. This is your first opportunity to truly explore a town, purchase new equipment, and learn more about the world.
- Exploration: Talk to every NPC. Some offer valuable information or initiate side quests later.
- Shopping: Visit the Item Shop and Weapon Shop.
- Item Shop: Stock up on Potions and Tents. Consider buying a few Phoenix Downs.
- Weapon Shop: Purchase new weapons and armor for your party. Prioritize gear that teaches useful abilities. For example, the Leather Plate for Zidane teaches "HP +10%," and the Cotton Robe for Vivi teaches "Protect."
- Synthesis Shop: Dali introduces the Synthesis Shop. While you might not have many components yet, remember this location. You can combine items to create more powerful gear.
- Chocobo Hot & Cold (Optional): You'll encounter a boy who mentions Chocobos. This hints at the Chocobo Hot & Cold mini-game, a great way to find rare items later on.
By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared for the challenges ahead and have a solid foundation for your Final Fantasy IX journey!
