Maximizing your characters in Final Fantasy IX involves strategic equipment choices to learn new abilities, as character progression differs from many RPGs. Instead of gaining new actions directly through leveling, abilities are acquired from specific pieces of equipment. This system encourages players to experiment with different gear to unlock a full range of skills for their party members.
Ability Acquisition
Unlike many RPGs where characters learn abilities upon leveling up, Final Fantasy IX ties ability acquisition directly to equipment. Equipping certain items will grant characters access to new skills. For example, the Rebirth Ring teaches the Auto-Life skill, and the Moonstone teaches Beast Killer. It is crucial to equip these items to ensure your characters learn these valuable abilities.
During your return trip to Treno, after winning the second round of a tournament, you will have a choice of two ATEs: Hallucination and Premonition. Selecting Hallucination is necessary to view a later ATE in Lindblum. After choosing one, switch screens and select the other. After these ATEs, save your game before facing the champion. You have only one chance to defeat the champion, so saving beforehand is essential. Winning this match rewards you with a Rebirth Ring, which is excellent for teaching Auto-Life early.
Upon returning to the Prima Vista, ensure Zidane is equipped with the Mage Masher from the Masked Man and the Moonstone (if obtained from the sword fighting mini-game) to learn Beast Killer.
