Installation & Setup
Welcome to Final Fantasy VII Remake! This guide will walk you through the essential steps to get the game up and running on your chosen platform, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience from the very beginning.
Platform-Specific Installation
The installation process varies slightly depending on whether you are playing on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or PC.
PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5
- Disc Installation: Insert the game disc into your console. The game will automatically begin installing. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
- Digital Installation: If you purchased the game digitally, navigate to your game library, select Final Fantasy VII Remake, and choose "Download." The console will handle the rest.
- Updates: Once installed, the game will likely prompt you to download and install the latest patches. It is highly recommended to install all available updates for the best performance and to include any bug fixes or new features.
PC (Steam / Epic Games Store)
- Purchase and Download: Purchase the game from your preferred digital storefront (Steam or Epic Games Store). Once purchased, initiate the download. Ensure you have sufficient free storage space, as the game is substantial.
- Installation: The game will typically install automatically after the download is complete. If not, locate the game in your library and select "Install."
- Verify Game Files: After installation, it's good practice to verify the integrity of your game files. In Steam, right-click the game in your library, go to Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game files. For Epic Games Store, click the three dots next to the game title and select "Verify."
- Updates: Both Steam and Epic Games Store will automatically download and install game updates. Ensure your client is set to auto-update games.
Initial Game Settings
Upon launching Final Fantasy VII Remake for the first time, you'll be presented with several initial setup options. Taking a moment to configure these will greatly enhance your gameplay experience.
Graphics Settings (PC)
PC players have a wide array of graphical options to fine-tune performance and visual fidelity. Key settings include:
- Resolution: Match your monitor's native resolution for the sharpest image.
- Texture Quality: Higher settings require more VRAM. Adjust based on your graphics card.
- Shadow Quality: Significant impact on performance. Lowering can boost FPS.
- Anti-Aliasing: Smooths jagged edges. FXAA is less demanding than MSAA.
- Frame Rate Limit: Set to match your monitor's refresh rate (e.g., 60 FPS) or unlock for potentially higher, though this can cause screen tearing if not managed.
Audio Settings
Adjust master volume, music, sound effects, and voice volume to your preference. Consider using headphones for a more immersive audio experience, especially for directional cues in combat.
Control Settings
- Controller: Final Fantasy VII Remake is best played with a controller. The game supports DualShock 4, DualSense, and most XInput-compatible controllers.
- Keybindings (PC): If using a keyboard and mouse, you can rebind keys to suit your playstyle. However, controller is generally recommended for this title.
- Vibration: Enable or disable controller vibration for feedback during combat and key moments.
Gameplay Settings
- Camera Speed: Adjust how quickly the camera moves.
- Tutorials: You can choose to display or hide tutorials. It's advisable to keep them on for your first playthrough.
Early Game Foundations (Chapters 1-3)
The initial chapters of Final Fantasy VII Remake are crucial for understanding its core mechanics. Focus on mastering basic combat, ATB generation, and Materia usage.
Materia Essentials
As you acquire Materia, prioritize these early combinations:
- Elemental Materia + Weapon/Armor Slot: Link Elemental Materia to an empty slot on your weapon or armor. When linked to a weapon, it adds elemental damage to your attacks. When linked to armor, it grants resistance to that element.
- Fire/Ice/Lightning Materia: These are your primary offensive spells. Learn their effects and when to use them.
- Healing Materia: Essential for survival. Keep it equipped on at least one character.
- Magnify Materia: Found later, but invaluable for targeting multiple enemies with spells.
ATB Generation
Building your ATB gauge is key to unleashing powerful abilities and spells. Effective methods include:
- Basic Attacks: Standard attacks fill the ATB gauge.
- Blocking: Successfully blocking attacks can grant a small ATB boost.
- Dodging: Timely dodges can also contribute to ATB.
- Character Abilities: Abilities like Cloud's "Focused Thrust" or Tifa's "Unbridled Strength" are excellent for building ATB quickly and applying pressure.
Early Combat Tips
- Enemy Weaknesses: Use the Assess Materia (obtained early) to identify enemy weaknesses. Exploiting these is critical for efficient combat.
- MP Management: MP is a precious resource, especially on higher difficulties. Use basic attacks and abilities to conserve MP for when spells are truly necessary.
- Stagger Gauge: Learn to build the Stagger gauge on enemies by dealing damage and exploiting weaknesses. A staggered enemy takes significantly more damage and cannot act.
By carefully installing and configuring your game, and by understanding these early-game principles, you'll be well-prepared to face the challenges of Midgar and beyond.
