Cavern of the Stolen Fayth & Yojimbo

The Cavern of the Stolen Fayth is a pivotal location in Final Fantasy X, not only for its narrative sificance but also for the opportunity to obtain the powerful Aeon, Yojimbo. This optional Aeon can be a significant asset in combat, especially against tougher enemies and superbosses, but acquiring him requires a substantial investment of Gil and strategic combat.

Located off the shores of the Calm Lands, the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth is a treacherous dungeon filled with powerful fiends and environmental hazards. The path to Yojimbo is guarded by various enemies, and the dungeon itself is designed to test your party's strength and resilience. As you delve deeper, the encounters become more challenging, requiring you to use your party's abilities and Aeons effectively.

Upon reaching the deepest part of the cavern, you will find the summoner Yunalesca, who guards the path to Yojimbo. Before you can even attempt to summon Yojimbo, you must first defeat him in a challenging battle. Yojimbo is a formidable foe, known for his devastating attacks and unique summoning mechanics. He uses several powerful techniques, including Zanmato, which can instantly defeat your party if you're not prepared.

Strategy for Fighting Yojimbo:

  • Preparation is Key: Ensure your party members have high HP and strong defenses. Equip armor with abilities like Auto-Protect and Auto-Haste.
  • Aeon Support: use your existing Aeons to support your party. Anima and Bahamut can be particularly useful due to their high damage output.
  • Target Yojimbo's Weaknesses: Yojimbo is weak to lightning-based attacks. Exploiting this can significantly shorten the battle.
  • Manage Overdrives: Save your party members' Overdrive attacks for when Yojimbo is vulnerable or when you need to deal burst damage.
  • Watch for Zanmato: Be extremely cautious of Yojimbo's Zanmato attack. If he begins to charge it, focus all your efforts on dealing damage to interrupt him or prepare for a potential game over.

After defeating Yojimbo in battle, you will have the option to pay him a hefty sum of Gil to become your ally. The amount required can vary, but it is generally quite high, often exceeding 200,000 Gil. The higher the amount you pay, the more likely Yojimbo is to use his most powerful attacks in battle for you.

Hiring Yojimbo:

  • Negotiate Wisely: The initial cost can be steep. It's recommended to have a significant amount of Gil saved up before attempting to recruit him.
  • Payment Tiers: Yojimbo's effectiveness is directly tied to how much you pay him. Higher payments increase the chance of him using his strongest abilities, including Zanmato.
  • Strategic Use: Yojimbo can be a game-changer, especially in boss battles. However, his unpredictable nature means he might not always act as you intend.

The Cavern of the Stolen Fayth is a challenging but ultimately rewarding dungeon. Successfully recruiting Yojimbo can significantly alter the difficulty of later parts of the game, making him a valuable addition to your party.
