Teleportation and Aetherytes

Navigating the vast and beautiful world of Eorzea and beyond is made significantly easier through the use of Aetherytes and the Teleportation system. Understanding how to effectively utilize these tools is crucial for efficient questing, FATE participation, and general exploration. This detailed guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Aetherytes, teleportation costs, and even how to set up your personal teleportation points.

Understanding Aetherytes

Aetherytes are large, crystal-like structures found in major cities, towns, and various quest hubs across the game world. Interacting with an Aetheryte attunes you to it, adding it to your list of available teleportation destinations. There are two main types of Aetherytes:

  • Major Aetherytes: These are the large, central Aetherytes found in capital cities like Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, Ul'dah, Ishgard, Kugane, Crystarium, Radz-at-Han, and Old Sharlayan. Attuning to these is often part of the main scenario questline.
  • Minor Aetherytes: Smaller Aetherytes scattered throughout zones and smaller settlements. Attuning to these expands your teleportation network significantly. Always interact with any new Aetheryte you encounter!

The Teleportation System: How it Works

Once attuned to an Aetheryte, you can teleport to it from almost anywhere in the game world (with a few exceptions, such as during certain instanced duties or specific quest phases). To teleport:

  1. Open your main menu (default key: Esc).
  2. Navigate to the "Teleport" option.
  3. A list of all attuned Aetherytes will appear, categorized by region.
  4. Select your desired destination.
  5. Confirm the teleportation.

Teleportation incurs a Gil cost, which varies based on the distance between your current location and your destination. The further the distance, the higher the cost. However, there are several ways to reduce or even eliminate these costs:

  • Aetheryte Tickets: These consumable items can be obtained through various means, such as daily roulettes, Grand Company Seals, or certain quests. Using an Aetheryte Ticket makes your next teleport free.
  • Free Teleport Destination: You can designate one Aetheryte as your "Free Teleport" destination. Teleporting to this specific Aetheryte will always be free. To set this:
    1. Interact with the desired Major Aetheryte.
    2. Select the option "Set as Free Teleport Destination."
You can change your Free Teleport destination at any time, but it's wise to choose a frequently visited city.
  • Reduced Teleportation Costs:
    • Favorite Destinations: You can designate up to three Aetherytes as "Favorite Destinations," which reduces the teleportation cost to them by 50%. To set these:
      1. Interact with the desired Major Aetheryte.
      2. Select the option "Set as Favorite Destination."
    • Grand Company Buffs: Certain Grand Company Squadron missions can provide temporary buffs that reduce teleportation costs.
    • Company Actions: Free Companies can activate "Reduced Teleportation Fees" buffs, which lower the cost for all members.

Miniature Aetherytes: Teleporting to Your Home

For players who own a house or apartment, the Miniature Aetheryte is an invaluable tool for quick access to your personal space. This special furnishing allows you to teleport directly to your estate from anywhere in the world.

  1. Acquiring a Miniature Aetheryte:
    • Purchase it from the Housing Merchant in any residential district (e.g., Mist, The Lavender Beds, The Goblet, Shirogane, Empyreum).
    • The item is called "Miniature Aetheryte" and typically costs 5,000 Gil.
  2. Placing the Miniature Aetheryte:
    • Enter your house or apartment.
    • Open the "Housing" menu (default key: U).
    • Select "Indoor Furnishings" or "Outdoor Furnishings" depending on where you want to place it (it can be placed both indoors and outdoors).
    • Place the Miniature Aetheryte in your desired location.
  3. Using the Miniature Aetheryte:
    • Once placed, your house/apartment will automatically appear as a teleportation option in your Teleport menu, usually listed under the residential district's name.
    • Teleporting to your Miniature Aetheryte is always free!

Aether Currents and Flying

While not directly related to teleportation, Aether Currents are essential for unlocking flying in new zones. Each expansion introduces new zones where flying is initially locked. To unlock flying in a specific zone, you must attune to all Aether Currents within that zone and complete all Aether Current-granting quests. Once flying is unlocked, navigating the zone becomes significantly faster, making it easier to reach Aetherytes and quest objectives.

Always keep an eye out for Aether Currents on your map (they appear as a small wind icon) and use your Aether Compass (found in your Key Items) to pinpoint their exact location when nearby. Collecting all Aether Currents in a zone is a high priority for efficient gameplay.
