Pair Up & Attack Stance Mechanics
The "Pair Up" mechanic in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation allows two adjacent units to combine into a single combat entity. When paired, the lead unit retains their turn, but the secondary unit provides stat bonuses and can also initiate attacks or defend. This system adds a significant layer of tactical depth, enabling players to protect weaker units by pairing them with stronger ones, or to create offensive powerhouses by combining high-damage characters. The secondary unit can also choose to "Guard" instead of attacking, providing a significant defensive boost to the lead unit. This choice is crucial for surviving powerful enemy attacks, especially from formidable foes like the Faceless. Understanding when to attack and when to guard is a key element of mastering Pair Up.
The "Attack Stance" is a related mechanic that allows a unit to position themselves adjacent to an ally without initiating a Pair Up. This stance provides a defensive bonus to the unit in Attack Stance, making them more resilient to enemy attacks. It's a useful tool for creating defensive formations or for protecting a vulnerable unit that is not yet ready to Pair Up. The benefits of Attack Stance are less pronounced than those of Pair Up, but it offers a safer, less committal way to provide support. The strategic application of both Pair Up and Attack Stance can dramatically alter the flow of battle, allowing for more aggressive pushes or more secure defensive lines. For example, pairing a strong offensive unit like Xander with a supportive unit that can heal or buff can create an unstoppable offensive force, while pairing a fragile mage with a durable knight can ensure their survival on the front lines.
