Paralogue 15: The Divine Dragon
Fire Emblem Engage, while focusing on gameplay, features a story with interesting concepts, such as the protagonist Alear being a Fell Dragon imbued with Divine Dragon blood. This backstory, involving Alear's father Sombron and their adoptive mother, had potential for deep narrative exploration. The game also includes fun callbacks to other Lords through Emblems and introduces several good characters like Yunaka and Alfred, though their character development often relies on finding specific support conversations.
The Fire Emblem franchise began on April 20, 1990, with the release of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light for the Famicom. Developed by Intelligent Systems, this Japan-exclusive title laid the groundwork for the series and the tactical RPG genre. Shouzou Kaga was the main creative contributor for this game and subsequent titles up to Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.
The game established conventions such as:
- Chess-like strategy gameplay
- RPG mechanics allowing characters to gain experience and grow stronger
- Swapping character equipment based on need
For twelve years, five more games were released exclusively in Japan, until Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance.
