Chapter 19: The Great Wall
Chapter 19 explores various gameplay mechanics designed to adjust difficulty and character management within the _Fire Emblem_ series. _Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon_ introduced side chapters, also known as Gaiden chapters, which become accessible if a specific number of units are lost. These chapters provide new recruitable characters, helping to maintain the player's roster.
_Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem_ brought Casual Mode to the franchise. In Casual Mode, the permanent death mechanic is disabled, allowing defeated player characters to return in the subsequent chapter. This mode aims to reduce difficulty and make the game more accessible to new players. _Fire Emblem Fates_ further expanded on this with Phoenix Mode, where defeated characters return to battle on the very next turn with full health. Phoenix Mode is designed for strategy RPG novices, offering an even more forgiving experience.
In _Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade_, Lyn's Tale serves as an extended tutorial for new players. Units defeated during Lyn's story do not suffer permanent death and reappear in Eliwood's/Hector's story, which forms the main part of the game. However, characters lost in Lyn's story are weaker when they are reintroduced.
